The Determiner

• Complete sentence: They spread a lot of misinformation about the crime.

• Use of determiner:
- প্রচুর/অনেক অর্থে countable এবং uncountable উভয় প্রকার noun এর পূর্বে a lot of/lots of/plenty of বসে।
- প্রদত্ত বাক্যে misinformation যেহেতু একটি uncountable noun তাই এর পূর্বে সঠিক determiner হিসেবে a lot of বসবে।

- misinformation একটি uncountable noun তাই এর plural (misinformations) হয় না।
- সুতরাং, শূন্যস্থানে সঠিক উত্তর হবে গ) a lot of misinformation.

Correct answer: a great deal of.
- Complete sentence: She has a great deal of experience in the marketing industry.
- Bangla meaning: মার্কেটিং সেক্টরে তাঁর ব্যাপক অভিজ্ঞতা আছে।
- প্রদত্ত বাক্যে শূন্যস্থানের পরে uncountable noun 'experience" থাকায় এর পূর্বে "a great deal of" বসবে।

• A good/great deal of something:
- English Meaning: a large amount of.
- Bangla Meaning: অনেক; অনেকটা; অনেকখানি; বেশ; প্রচুর; ঢের।

- We use much, a lot, lots and a good deal as adverbs to refer to frequency, quantity, and degree.
- কোনো কিছুর সংখ্যা, পরিমাণ ইত্যাদির দিক থেকে পর্যাপ্ত বা যথেষ্ট বুঝাতে সাধারণত uncountable noun এর পূর্বে determiner হিসেবে A good/great deal of ব্যবহৃত হয়।

অন্যদিকে,
ক) A great number of→ countable plural noun-এর পূর্বে ব্যবহৃত হয় (যেমন: A great number of people).

গ) A number of → countable plural noun-এর পূর্বে ব্যবহৃত হয় (A number of people).

ঘ) Many → countable plural noun-এর সাথে ব্যবহৃত হয় (যেমন: Many people/many letters).

Some, a lot of, lots of, no এই Determiners গুলো countable এবং uncountable উভয়ই ধরনের noun এর পূর্বে বসতে পারে।
অপরদিকে, An amount of, little, a little, the little, much শুধু uncountable noun এর পূর্বে বসে।
মনে রাখুনঃ An amount of Little Fish (little, a little, the little, & much)- ছোট মাছের পরিমাণ (uncountable noun);
কিছু না প্রচুর (some, no, a lot of, lots of)- countable এবং uncountable উভয় noun.
এছাড়া বাকি determiner (few, many, each, either ইত্যাদি) গুলো countable noun এর পূর্বে বসে।
বিশেষ নোটঃ এই ব্যাখ্যাটির কি ওয়ার্ড countable এবং uncountable noun তো বুঝেনই। আর এই ব্যাখ্যাও তো বুঝেছেন! সুতরাং আপনার Determiner অধ্যায় পড়া শেষ! দেখেন এই অধ্যায়ের বিগত সালের সকল চাকরির পরীক্ষার প্রশ্নের উত্তর আপনি সহজেই পারতেছেন!

Work হচ্ছে singular uncountable noun.
little, a little, the little, less- uncountable noun এর ক্ষেত্রে ব্যবহৃত হয়।

অন্যদিকে few, a few, the few, fewer, many, number of ইত্যাদি plural noun or countable noun এর পূর্বে বসে।

• The sentence is - I have much books to finish before the exam.

• Explanation:
- books হলো countable plural noun.
- much সব সময় uncountable noun এর আগে বসে।
- তাই সঠিক হবে: many books.

• Correct sentence is - "I have many books to finish before the exam."

• উল্লিখিত বাকি অপশনগুলো,
ক) Several students participated in the competition.
- এখানে Several (কিছু সংখ্যক) সঠিক determiner, যা plural countable noun "students" কে determine করতে ব্যবহৃত হয়েছে।

গ) A few friends came to visit me yesterday.
- A few + plural countable noun (friends) সঠিক determiner, যা countable noun "friends" কে determine করতে ব্যবহৃত হয়েছে।

ঘ) There is little hope of finding him alive.
- A little সঠিক determiner, যা uncountable noun "hope" কে determine করতে ব্যবহৃত হয়েছে।

- Determiner সাধারণত Noun কে Modify করে।
- Example of some determiners:
a, an, the, any, many, much, few, fewer, little, less, all, another, each, every, either, no, neither, this, that, those, these, my, our, your, his, her, a lot of, an amount of etc.
- But ও or হচ্ছে conjunction.
- Ah! হচ্ছে interjection.

• The sentence is - He gave several advices to his students.

• এই বাক্যটিতে determiner এর misuse করা হয়েছে, কারণ several advices না হয়ে several advice হলে সঠিক হতো।
- advice একটি uncountable noun, তাই এর plural হয় না।
- এটিকে plural করতে হলে সঠিক determiner বসিয়ে plural করতে হয়।
- যেমন: two pieces of advice, a lot of advice, some advice, etc.

• উল্লিখিত বাকি অপশনগুলো,
ক) We have plenty of reasons to be proud.
- "Plenty of" সঠিক determiner, যা countable noun "reasons" কে determine করতে ব্যবহৃত হয়েছে।
- Plenty of (প্রচুর; অঢেল) যা countable/ uncountable noun উভয়কে determine করে।

গ)  There is much water in the bottle.
- "much" সঠিক determiner, যা uncountable noun "water" কে determine করতে ব্যবহৃত হয়েছে।
- much শুধু uncountable noun এর পূর্বে বসে।

(ঘ) I need some sugar for the recipe.
- "Some" সঠিক determiner, যা uncountable noun "sugar" কে determine করতে ব্যবহৃত হয়েছে। 
- Some (কিছু/সামান্য পরিমাণ) countable/ uncountable noun উভয়কে determine করে।

• Article:
- Articles মূলত Noun, Pronoun এর আগে বসে তাদের সংখ্যা এবং নির্দিষ্টতা, অনির্দিষ্টতা জ্ঞাপন করে।
- Articles কে প্রধানত দুই ভাগে ভাগ করে যায়।
• Indefinite Articles: A, An-এরা  Indefinite Article.
• Definite Articles: The হলো Definite Article.

Article এর নিয়মানুযায়ী,
• বাদ্যযন্ত্র বাজালে (play) বাদ্যযন্ত্রটি নির্দিষ্ট, না বাজালে অনির্দিষ্ট।
Example:
- I have a guitar.
- I play the guitar.

• তবে play on ব্যবহার করলে কোন article বসবে না।
Example: I play on guitar.

Complete sentence: I play on piano during my free time.

We use some and any for talking about indefinite numbers or amounts of things. We use them with nouns or on their own, as pronouns. For example:

- We've got some amazing chocolate cake, and some carrot cake.
- Have you got any chocolate cake?

• Article:
- Article মূলত Noun, Pronoun এর আগে বসে তাদের সংখ্যা এবং নির্দিষ্টতা, অনির্দিষ্টতাকে বুঝায়।

• Article কে প্রধানত ২ ভাগে ভাগ করা যায়।
1. Indefinite Articles: A, An.
2. Definite Articles: The.

• article ‘a’ বসে consonant (Vowel পাঁচটি ছাড়া বাকিগুলো) যুক্ত শব্দের শুরুতে।
• article ‘an’ বসে vowel (a, e, I, o, u) যুক্ত শব্দের শুরুতে।

• Note:
- ‘a ও ‍an’ বসানোর ক্ষেত্রে প্রথম শব্দের উচ্চারণই মুখ্য।
- অর্থাৎ প্রথম উচ্চারণটি যদি vowel এর হয়। তাহলে an হবে।
- আর যদি প্রথম উচ্চারণটি consonant এর হয় তাহলে a হবে।

• Article এর নিয়মানুযায়ী,
- O দ্বারা শুরু সকল শব্দের পূর্বে ‍an বসবে।
- 'O' vowel এর উচ্চারণ যদি (wa) ওয়া এর মত হয় তবে এর পূর্বে article 'a' বসে।
- যেমন: A one(ওয়ান), a one-taka note, a one-eyed deer.

• তাই নিয়মানুযায়ী সঠিক উত্তর হবে - a.

• Article এ,

• Park বা Street(রাস্তা) নামের পূর্বে সাধারণত কোনো article বসে না।

Complete sentence: Sneha went to Central Park.

• Correct answer: She has fewer apples than her brother.

• Few/ A Few/ The Few সবসময় Plural Countable Noun এর সাথে বসে।
- কোন বাক্যে than থাকলে এবং তা দ্বারা কোন কিছুর সাথে কোন কিছুর তুলনা বুঝালে বাক্যটি হয় comparative sentence অর্থাৎ than এর আগে অবশ্যই comparative degree বসবে ।
- Few এর comparative হলো fewer.
- তাই, এখানে Fewer ব্যবহার হয়েছে।

• little এবং less uncountable noun এর সাথে বসে।

• Article:
- A, An ও The কে Article বলা হয়। এগুলো noun–এর অর্থকে স্পষ্ট বা নির্দিষ্ট করে তোলে।

Article সাধারণত দুই ধরনের—

- Indefinite Article: A, An,
- Definite Article: The.

Article ব্যবহারের নিয়ম অনুযায়ী:
- হ্রদের নামের আগে সাধারণভাবে the ব্যবহার করা হয় না।

উদাহরণ:

- Lake Superior
- Lake Baikal
- Lake Caspian

Correct Option: ঘ) Only a few crops

Complete Sentence: Only a few crops can be grown on arid land. 
বাংলা অনুবাদ: শুষ্ক জমিতে মাত্র কিছু ফসল উৎপাদন করা যায়।

- Crops একটি Countable noun (গণনাযোগ্য বিশেষ্য)।
- Countable noun-এর সাথে few বা a few ব্যবহৃত হয়।
- Only এর পরে সাধারণত a few (countable noun এর জন্য) অথবা a little (uncountable noun এর জন্য) ব্যবহৃত হয়।
- এখানে crops (countable) হওয়ায় only a few হবে।
- Only a few অর্থ: কেবলমাত্র কিছু (কয়েকটি)।
→ তাই সঠিক উত্তর হবে Only a few crops।

অন্য অপশনগুলো:
ক) Only little crop → little uncountable noun এর সাথে ব্যবহৃত হয়, crop countable।
খ) Only a little crops → a little uncountable noun এর সাথে ব্যবহৃত হয়, crops countable।
গ) Only few crop → few plural countable noun এর সাথে ব্যবহৃত হয়, কিন্তু এখানে singular crop দেওয়া হয়েছে।

Correct answer: a little.
Correct sentence: I always enjoy a little milk in my coffee.
- অল্প পরিমাণ অর্থে Uncountable noun "milk"এর পূর্বে Determiner হিসেবে 'a little' বসে।

• Determiner হচ্ছে noun/pronoun এর নির্দিষ্টতা, অনির্দিষ্টতা, সংখ্যা বা পরিমাপ নির্দেশক।
- 'a few' বা 'a little' উভয়ের অর্থই হচ্ছে অল্প কয়েকটি বা অল্প পরিমাণ।
- অল্প কয়েকটি অর্থে countable noun এর পূর্বে 'a few' বসে।
- কিন্তু অল্প একটু বা সামান্য পরিমাণ অর্থে uncountable noun এর পূর্বে 'a little' বসে।
- বাক্যটিতে 'milk' uncountable noun. তাই, এর পূর্বে determiner হিসেবে 'a little' বসবে।

Other options:
খ) Few
- Negative অর্থে ব্যবহৃত quantifier determiners, যাদের অর্থ অল্প সংখ্যক বা নেই বললেই চলে।
- Example: Very few people have been to the south pole.

ঘ) Little
- Negative অর্থে ব্যবহৃত quantifier determiners, যাদের অর্থ অল্প বা নেই বললেই চলে।
- Example: He has little money.

• Complete sentence: I have read Nazrul's Agnibina.
- Bangla meaning:আমি নজরুলের অগ্নিবীণা পড়েছি।

• ​Article এর নিয়মানুযায়ী,
- লেখকের নাম যদি তার রচিত সাহিত্যকর্ম বুঝাতে ব্যবহৃত হয়, তাহলে এর পূর্বে কোনো article বসে না।
- আবার গ্রন্থের নামের পূর্বে লেখকের নাম থাকলে তার পূর্বে কোনো article বসে না।

- প্রদত্ত প্রশ্নে গ্রন্থের (Agnibina) নামের পূর্বে লেখকের নাম Nazrul আছে, তাই এর পূর্বে কোনো article বসবে না।

• More examples:
- She reads Nazrul's Agnibina.
- I have read Rabindranath.

• Several of my friends are learning English.
- The determiner in the sentence: Both several and my.

• Determiner:
- যে সকল word 'Noun' -এর নির্দেশক, নির্দিষ্টতা, অনির্দিষ্টতা, পরিমাণ, সংখ্যা, মালিকানা, না-বাচকতা ইত্যাদি নির্দেশ করে, সেগুলোকে Determiner বলে।
- Determiner -এর প্রধান কাজ হলো Noun -কে determine করা।

• বিভিন্ন প্রকারের Determiner আছে, যেমন-
- Articles: A, An, The.
- Demonstrative: This, these, that, those.
- Possessive: My, your, his, her, etc.
- Interrogative: What, which, whose, etc.
- Quantifier: Some, several,  any, many, much, more, less, few, fewer, little, a lot of, no, etc.
- General Ordinals: Last, next, other, the other, etc.
- Cardinal Numerals: One, Two, Three, Four, etc.
- Ordinal Numeral: First, Second, Third, Fourth, etc.

• The correct sentence is - A small amount of water is in the bottle.

- A large amount of/ A small amount of এর সাথে সব সময় Uncountable Noun হয় এবং verb হিসেবে Singular verb বসে।
- Structure: A large amount of/ A small amount of + Uncountable Noun + Singular verb.

- প্রদত্ত sentence টিতে A large amount of এরপর water হলো Uncountable Noun এবং verb is হলো Singular.
- তাই নিয়ম অনুসারে প্রদত্ত sentence টি সঠিক।

- ভুল। কারণ, Quantity of rice singular এর সাথে singular verb is ব্যবহার হবে, not are.

- সে বাজার থেকে কিছু apples কিনেছে। এখানে ‘some’ হলো determiner.

• Determiner এর প্রধান কাজ Noun/Pronoun-কে Determine করা।
- Noun/Pronoun এর নির্দিষ্টতা-অনির্দিষ্টতা বুঝাতে এটি ব্যবহার হয়।
- তবে তা noun কে আংশিক কিংবা পরিপূর্ণ ভাবে modify করলেও, modify করা এটির প্রধান কাজ নয়।
- প্রশ্নে কেবল মাত্র That হল একটি demonstrative determiner.
- কারণ এটি noun book-কে নির্দেশ করছে।
- সুতরাং, সঠিক উত্তর that.

• Virtue is its own reward.
- No article is needed.

• Omission of article:
- সাধারণত material noun এবং abstract noun (uncountable) -এর পূর্বে article বসে না।
- যেমন: Virtue is its own reward.

• Article:
- A, An & The কে article বলে। এরা noun কে qualify করে।

Determiners

A determiner is a word which is used before a noun to show which particular example of the noun you are talking about. So it works like an adjective regarding modifying a noun. 

Examples
My English class starts at 7o'clock
These students live near the college
The books are quite inexpensive

In the above examples, the words 'my', 'these' and 'the' are determiners.

সঠিক উত্তর হলো: গ) a little

পূর্ণ বাক্য: The glass contains a little drinking water.

Water হলো একটা uncountable noun.
- Uncountable noun-এর সাথে a little ব্যবহার করা হয় যখন অল্প পরিমাণ বোঝাতে চাই (এবং সাধারণত positive অর্থে, অর্থাৎ কিছু আছে)।
- a little - অল্প কিছু (positive sense).
 Example: There is a little water left. (কিছু পানি আছে।)

অন্য অপশনগুলো ভুল:

ক) several - এটা countable noun-এর জন্য ব্যবহার হয় (several books, several people)। পানির সাথে ব্যবহার হয় না।

খ) many - countable plural noun-এর জন্য (many glasses, many books)। Uncountable-এর সাথে much হয় (much water), কিন্তু many হয় না।

ঘ) a few - countable plural noun-এর জন্য (a few books, a few glasses)। পানির মতো uncountable-এর সাথে ব্যবহার হয় না।

Correct answer: a little.
Complete sentence: There was a little water in the jug. She could quench her thirst.

• এখানে Water একটি Uncountable Noun যা গণনা করা যায় না,
- তাই এর আগে 'few' বা 'a few' বসতে পারে না। 'Few' এবং 'a few' কেবল Countable Noun-এর ক্ষেত্রে বসে।
- Uncountable noun এর ক্ষেত্রে Little, a little বসতে পারে।
- Little negative অর্থে ব্যবহৃত হয় যার অর্থ অল্প সংখ্যক বা নেই বললেই চলে।
- A little মানে হচ্ছে 'অল্প পরিমাণ আছে' (Positive sense)।
- যেহেতু সে তার তৃষ্ণা মেটাতে পেরেছে (quench her thirst), তার মানে জগে যথেষ্ট বা কিছুটা পানি ছিল।
- তাই এখানে সঠিক উত্তর হবে "a little".

• Little, a little, a few, few এর ব্যবহার:
- এগুলো হচ্ছে quantifier determiners.
- এগুলো দ্বারা কোনো কিছুর পরিমান, সংখ্যা এগুলোকে নির্দেশ করা হয়।

• Little, a little বসে uncountable noun এর ক্ষেত্রে এবং a few, few বসে countable noun এর ক্ষেত্রে।
- Little এবং few, negative অর্থে ব্যবহৃত quantifier determiners, যাদের অর্থ অল্প সংখ্যক বা নেই বললেই চলে।
- A little, a few, affirmative অর্থে ব্যবহৃত quantifier determiners, যাদের অর্থ কিছু সংখ্যক বা অল্প পরিমান।
