The Determiner

• A, E, I, O, U এই পাঁচটি Vowel এর পূর্বে an বসে। 
- তবে প্রদত্ত বাক্যটিতে Article হিসেবে 'an' বসবে F.C.P.S শব্দের 'F' Consonant হওয়া সত্ত্বেও।
- 'F' উচ্চারণ করতে গেলে 'a' উচ্চারণ প্রথমে আসে, যা একটি Vowel. 

• সংক্ষিপ্ত রূপ অর্থাৎ abbreviation এর প্রথম অক্ষর vowel এর মত উচ্চারিত হলে তার পূর্বে an বসে।
আবার, abbreviation এর প্রথম অক্ষর consonant এর মত উচ্চারিত হলে তার পূর্বে a বসে।
যেমন- an M.B.B.S, an F.C.P.S, an M.A, a B.A, a B.SC.

Words like my, our, your, his, her, its, and their are known as possessive determiners. They come before nouns and indicate ownership of the noun in question, as their name suggests:
My leg hurts.
James sold his business.
Bring your children with you.

• Determiner:
- এর প্রধান কাজ Noun/ Pronoun কে Determine করা।
- Noun/ Pronoun এর নির্দিষ্টতা-অনির্দিষ্টতা বুঝাতে এটি ব্যবহার হয়।
- তবে তা Noun কে আংশিক কিংবা পরিপূর্ণ ভাবে modify করলেও, modify করা এটির প্রধান কাজ নয়।

• নিম্নে Determiner এর তালিকা দেওয়া হলো:
• Articles:
- a, an, the.

• Demonstratives:
- this, that, these, those.

• Possessives:
- my, your, his, her, its, our, their, Jahangir's.

• Quantifiers:
- some, any, much, many, a lot of, a little, little, a few, few, enough, several, plenty of, all, both, no, each, every, either, neither, more, less, most, a lot of, lots of, plenty of, etc.

• Numbers:
- one, two, three, four, five, six (etc.)

• General Ordinals:
- Last, next, other, the other, etc.

• Interrogative Determiners:
- which, what, whose.

• Correct Answer: No article.

• ভাষার নামের পূর্বে The বসে না।
- Example: Arabic is spoken in many countries.

• কিন্তু ভাষার পর Language শব্দটি থাকলে উক্ত ভাষার পূর্বে The ব্যবহার করা হয়।

• Most যদি সবচেয়ে অর্থ না দিয়ে Very (খুব) অর্থে ব্যবহৃত হয়, তাহলে The না বসে a/an বসে।
- Example: He leads a most unhappy life.

• Most যদি কোন Verb কে অথবা কোন Adverb কে Modify করে তাহলে Most এর আগে The বসবে না।
- Example: He walks most slowly.

• Correct answer: I like him most.
- এখানে "most" শব্দটি like (verb) কে modify করছে, অর্থাৎ adverb হিসেবে এখানে ব্যবহৃত হয়েছে। যার অর্থ "সবচেয়ে বেশি"।
- Adverb হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হলে "most” এর আগে কোনো article ব্যবহৃত হয় না।
- তাই, এখানে no article সঠিক।

any হল একটি determiner। এটি trouble-কে নির্দেশ করে বুঝাচ্ছে।
Determiner: a modifying word determines the kind of reference a noun or noun group has, for example a, the, every.

Correct answer: no article, a.
- Complete Sentence: He went to hospital because he had a heart attack.

• Article এর নিয়মানুযায়ী, School, college, market, bed, hospital, prison, mosque, temple, church, court of ইত্যাদি মূখ্য উদ্দেশ্যে (যেটা যেটার জন্য নির্মিত) ব্যবহৃত হলে কোন Article বসে না।
- যেমন: I go to school everyday.

• কিন্তু স্থানগুলো অন্য উদ্দেশ্যে ব্যবহৃত হলে এদের আগে Article বসে।
- যেমন: I went to the hospital to visit my uncle.

- তাই Article এর নিয়মানুযায়ী, তাই প্রথম শূন্যস্থানে "no article" হবে, কারণ সে অসুস্থ (মূখ্য উদ্দেশ্যে) তাই হাসপাতালে গিয়েছিলো 
- দ্বিতীয় ক্ষেত্রে শব্দ (Heart attack) টি Consonant এর উচ্চারণ দিয়ে শুরু হওয়ায় এর পূর্বে Article a বসবে।

• Articles মুলত Noun, Pronoun এর আগে বসে তাদের সংখ্যা এবং নির্দিষ্টতা, অনির্দিষ্টতা জ্ঞাপন করে।
- Articles কে প্রধানত দুই ভাগে ভাগ করে যায়।
• Indefinite Articles: A, An-এরা  Indefinite Article.
• Definite Articles: The - Definite Article.

• এখানে কোনো নির্দিষ্ট Laptop-এর কথা বলা হচ্ছে না, বরং যেকোনো একটি Laptop-এর কথা বলা হচ্ছে।
"Laptop" শব্দটি consonant sound দিয়ে শুরু হয়েছে।আর বাক্যে এটি প্রথমবার উল্লেখ করা হয়েছে।
- তাই indefinite article "a" ব্যবহার হবে।

Complete sentence: My sister really wants a Laptop for her birthday.

অন্যদিকে, 
The - নির্দিষ্ট (specific) dress-এর কথা বললে বসে, যেটা আগে থেকে উল্লেখ করা হয়েছে। 
Example: My sister really wants the dress we saw yesterday.
- (আগে দেখা নির্দিষ্ট ড্রেস) তাই the বসবে।

article ‘a’ বসে consonant (Vowel পাঁচটি ছাড়া বাকিগুলো) যুক্ত শব্দের শুরুতে।
article ‘an’ বসে vowel (a, e, I, o, u) যুক্ত শব্দের শুরুতে।

বি:দ্র: ‘a ও ‍an’ বসানোর ক্ষেত্রে প্রথম শব্দের উচ্চারণই মুখ্য।
অর্থাৎ প্রথম উচ্চারণটি যদি vowel এর হয়। তাহলে an হবে।
আর যদি প্রথম উচ্চারণটি consonant এর হয় তাহলে a হবে।

O দ্বারা শুরু সকল শব্দের পূর্বে ‍an বসবে। শুধু one এর পূর্বে ‍a বসবে।
তাই সঠিক বাক্য - It is a universal truth that the earth moves round the sun.

• Complete sentence: What did you drink with lunch yesterday?
- Bangla Meaning: গতকাল দুপুরের খাবারের সাথে তুমি কী পান করেছিলে?

• Article -এর নিয়মানুযায়ী,
- খাবার (meals) breakfast, lunch, dinner, ইত্যাদির পূর্বে article (a/an) বসে না।
- তবে খাবারের (meals) পূর্বে Adjective থাকলে অথবা বিশেষার্থে এদের পূর্বে article (a/an) বসে।
- যেমন: We had a good breakfast yesterday.

যেমন: I have breakfast at 8 a.m.

• তবে খাবারের পূর্বে adjective বসলে a/an বসে।

• যেকোনো জাতির নামের পুর্বে article হিসাবে the বসাতে হয়।

• সাধারণত দেশের নামের আগে article বসে না। তবে দ্বীপপুঞ্জের নামের আগে বা যে সকল দেশ দ্বীপপুঞ্জ নিয়ে গঠিত সেগুলোর আগে 'The' article বসে।

• Example:
- The Cook Islands,
- The Maldives,
- The Netherlands,
- The Philippines,
- The Seychelles,
- The Solomon Islands.

• এছাড়া সমষ্টিবাচক দেশের নামের পূর্বে the ব্যবহৃত হয়।
- Example: the U.K., the U.S.A., the U.A.E.

বাক্যের অর্থ: তিতুমীর কদাচিৎ জন্ম নেয়।
এখানে বাক্যটি দিয়ে বোঝাচ্ছে তিতুমীরের মতো (সাহসী, দেশপ্রেমিক) লোক কদাচিৎ জন্ম নেয়।
যদি Proper Noun নির্দিষ্ট ব্যক্তিকে না বুঝিয়ে তার মত যে কোনো ব্যক্তিকে বুঝায়, তখন তার পূর্বে a/an বসে।

• chairs একটি countable noun, তাই এর পূর্বে determiner হিসেবে much নয় many বসবে।
- তাই এই sentence টিতে determiner এর misuse হয়েছে।

• উল্লিখিত বাকি অপশনগুলো,
ক) I read all the books.
- books (বই) হলো plural countable noun, আর countable noun এর পূর্বে determiner হিসেবে all ব্যবহৃত হয়।

গ) She bought many apples from the market.
- apples হলো plural countable noun, তাই এর পূর্বে determiner হিসেবে many ব্যবহৃত হয়েছে।

ঘ) We saw several birds in the garden.
- birds ও plural countable noun, আর several determiner হিসেবে plural countable noun এর পূর্বেই বসে।

Correct answer: some
Complete sentence: Could you give me some information about the train schedule?
- প্রশ্নে 'information' uncountable noun, তাই এর পূর্বে determiner হিসেবে "some" বসবে।

• যে সকল noun কে গণনা করা যায় না  তাকে Uncountable noun বলে।
- যেমন: Bread, Equipment, Furniture, information, luggage, poetry, work, homework, scenery, traffic, hair ইত্যাদি।
- Uncountable noun -এর plural হয় না এবং এদের পূর্বে article ও হয় না।
- কিছু determiner কেবল uncountable noun কে modify করে। যেমন : little, a little, very little, much ইত্যাদি। 
- আবার, Some, a lot of, lots of, no এই Determiners গুলো countable এবং uncountable উভয়ই ধরনের noun এর পূর্বে বসতে পারে।
- তবে, Few, a few, very few, many ইত্যাদি Determiners কেবল Countable noun কে modify করে।

• শূন্যস্থানে সঠিক উত্তর হবে - a little.
• Complete sentence: Only a little courage can help you face your fears.

courage - uncountable noun.
Uncountable noun–এর জন্য আমরা ব্যবহার করি:

- a little → কিছু (positive sense),
- little → খুব কম (negative sense).

• Only এর পর সর্বদাই a few বা a little ব্যবহৃত হয়। 
- Countable noun এর ক্ষেত্রে only a few এবং uncountable noun এর ক্ষেত্রে only a little ব্যবহৃত হয়।
- 'courage' uncountable noun তাই এর ক্ষেত্রে only a little ব্যবহৃত হয়েছে।

• Structure: 
- Only + a few/ a few of + plural countable noun +plural verb + ext.
- Only + a little/ a little of + uncountable noun + singular verb + ext.

- One and a half + plural noun + singular verb.
- One and a half hours is a long time.
So, the correct expression is:
- He bought one and a half kilos of wheat.

Correct answer: a lot of.
Complete sentence: There are a lot of dangerous drivers. 
- বাক্যটিতে drivers যেহেতু plural noun তাই এর পূর্বে "a lot of"  বসবে।

• A lot of
- Meaning: A large number or amount of (things, people, etc.)
- এটি Countable (গণনাযোগ্য) এবং Uncountable (অগণনযোগ্য) উভয় প্রকার Noun-এর আগেই বসে।
- এখানে 'drivers' একটি Countable Plural Noun, তাই এর পূর্বে "a lot of" বসবে।

Other options:
ক) A very lot of
- অনেক/প্রচুর বোঝায়।
- 'A lot of'-এর আগে 'very' বসে না।

খ) Very many of
- 'Many of' সাধারণত তখনই ব্যবহৃত হয় যখন এরপর কোনো নির্দিষ্ট Pronoun (যেমন: them, us) বা 'the/these' যুক্ত noun থাকে।
- 'Many of'-এর আগে 'very' বসে না।

ঘ) Very much
- 'Much' সাধারণত Uncountable noun এর ক্ষেত্রে ব্যবহৃত হয়।
- যেহেতু 'drivers' একটি Countable Plural Noun, তাই তাই এর পূর্বে  'much' বসবে না।

Determiner হচ্ছে noun/pronoun এর নির্দিষ্টতা, অনির্দিষ্টতা, সংখ্যা বা পরিমাপ নির্দেশক।

- এটি noun কে আংশিক বা সম্পূর্ণ ভাবে modify করলেও modify করা এটির প্রধান কাজ নয়।

Option গুলোর মধ্যে will হচ্ছে Auxiliary verb,
take হলো finite + transitive verb,
time হচ্ছে object+ noun এবং

A বা An এর ব্যবহার ঠিক করা হয় পরবর্তী শব্দটি কোন ধ্বনি (Sound) দিয়ে শুরু হচ্ছে তার উপর ভিত্তি করে। যেন ফলশ্রুতিতে উচ্চারণ (Pronunciation) সহজ হয়।
We use 'a' when the word that follows it begins with a consonant sound. We use 'an' when it's followed by a vowel sound. This makes pronunciation easier.

According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary -
Choosing between the indefinite articles a and an is determined by the sound of the following word. If the word begins with a consonant sound you would use a, such as "a dog" and "a balloon," as well as "a one" and "a unicorn." If the word begins with a vowel sound, use an, such as in "an honorable man," and with spoken acronyms like "an FBI agent." Words like historic, with a pronounced "H," can use either a or an.

According to  Cambridge Dictionary -
We use 'a' in front of consonant sounds and 'an' in front of vowel sounds. So, for instance, someone asked whether to use 'a' or 'an' before the abbreviation 'MBA'. The answer is 'an' because the sound of the first letter is /em/, so it begins with a vowel sound, even though the letter itself is a consonant.

According to Purdue University -
The choice of the article is based upon the phonetic (sound) quality of the first letter in a word, not on the orthographic (written) representation of the letter.

We use 'a' before a consonant sound.
Example: A car, a house, a big truck, a wheel. Warning: Some words that begin with a vowel letter in writing have a consonant sound.
Example: a university, a one-year-old child.
We use 'an' before a vowel sound.
Example: An apple, an old shoe, an orchestra, an umbrella.

Warning: Some words that begin with a consonant letter in writing have a vowel sound.
Example: an hour, an MP3 player.

- বাদ্যযন্ত্র বাজানো (play) বোঝাতে বাদ্যযন্ত্রের নামের পূর্বে the বসে।
​- তবে বাজানো (play) বোঝাতে play on ব্যবহার করলে কোন article বসবে না।

- কিন্তু কারো বাদ্যযন্ত্র থাকা বোঝাতে বাদ্যযন্ত্রের নামের পূর্বে a/an বসে।
