The Determiner

• শূন্যস্থানে সঠিক উত্তর হচ্ছে -No article.
- Complete sentence: Sandwip is a beautiful island.

• Article এর নিয়মানুযায়ী,
- সাধারণত  নদী, সাগর, মহাসাগর, উপসাগর, পর্বতশ্রেণী, পর্বতমালা, দ্বীপপুঞ্জ ইত্যাদির নামের পূর্বে article হিসাবে the বসে।
 -যেমন: The Himalayas, The Bindhays, The Padma, The Andes, The Andaman, The Nicobar, The Bay of Bengal, the Pacific Ocean, ইত্যাদি। 

• কিন্তু একটি মাত্র দ্বীপ ও পর্বত বা পর্বতশৃঙ্গ এর নামের পূর্বে article বসে না। 
- যেমন: Mount Everest একটি মাত্র পর্বতশৃঙ্গ এর নাম তাই এর পূর্বে কোনো article বসবে না।

• ঠিক তেমনি ভাবে Sandwip দ্বারা একটি মাত্র দ্বীপ কে নির্দেশ করছে,  তাই এর  পূর্বে কোনো article বসবে না।

• Article এর ব্যবহার সাধারণত pronunciation বা উচ্চারণের উপর নির্ভরশীল।
- কোনো word এর শুরুতে যদি consonant letter থাকে তবে তার পূর্বে article হিসেবে a বসে।
- কিন্তু Consonant এর উচ্চারণ vowel এর মত হলে a না হয়ে an হবে। যেমন: an FBI.
- FBI শব্দটি উচ্চারণ শুরু হয় ‘a’ vowel sound দিয়ে শুরু।
- ইংরেজিতে vowel sound দিয়ে শুরু হওয়া শব্দের আগে “an” ব্যবহার করা হয়।

Complete sentence: He wants to become an FBI agent after graduation.

এই প্রশ্নে ভাষাগত সমস্যা ছিল।
open fields এর পরিবর্তে open field হওয়ার কথা ছিল। তাহলে article হিসেবে an বসতো।

প্রশ্ন অনুসারে open fields - plural বিবেচনায় নিলে এর পূর্বে কোন article বসবে না।

তাই সঠিক উত্তর হবে no article.

• Article এর ক্ষেত্রে, A, E, I, O, U এই পাঁচটি Vowel এর পূর্বে an বসে। 

- তবে প্রদত্ত বাক্যটিতে F. R. C. S. শব্দের 'F' Consonant হওয়া সত্ত্বেও Article হিসেবে 'an' বসবে। 
- 'F' উচ্চারণ করতে গেলে 'a' উচ্চারণ প্রথমে আসে, যা একটি Vowel. 

• Correct Answer: He is an F. R. C. S.

• সংক্ষিপ্ত রূপ অর্থাৎ abbreviation এর প্রথম অক্ষর vowel এর মত উচ্চারিত হলে তার পূর্বে an বসে।
- Example: an M.B.B.S., an F.C.P.S., an M.A.

• আবার, abbreviation এর প্রথম অক্ষর consonant এর মত উচ্চারিত হলে তার পূর্বে a বসে।
- Example: a B.A, a B.SC.

• The incorrect sentence is - ঘ) The teacher gave much advices before the exam.

• এই বাক্যটিতে determiner -এর misuse করা হয়েছে, কারণ much advices না হয়ে much advice হলে সঠিক হতো।
- advice একটি uncountable noun, তাই এর plural হয় না।
- এটিকে plural করতে হলে সঠিক determiner বসিয়ে plural করতে হয়।
- যেমন: two pieces of advice, a lot of advice, some advice, etc.
- সঠিক বাক্যটি হবে- The teacher gave much advice before the exam.

Other options:
(ক) She needs some information before making a decision. 
- "Some" সঠিক determiner, যা uncountable noun "information" -কে determine করতে ব্যবহৃত হয়েছে। 
- Some (কিছু/সামান্য পরিমাণ) countable/uncountable noun উভয়কে determine করে।

(খ) They have plenty of reasons to celebrate.
- "Plenty of" সঠিক determiner, যা countable noun "reasons" কে determine করতে ব্যবহৃত হয়েছে।
- Plenty of (প্রচুর; অঢেল) যা countable/uncountable noun উভয়কে determine করে।

গ) There is little hope for success.
- "Little" সঠিক determiner, যা uncountable noun "hope" -কে determine করতে ব্যবহৃত হয়েছে।
- Little (নগণ্য; নাই বললেই চলে) শুধু uncountable noun -এর পূর্বে বসে।

• সুতরাং, ভুল বাক্যটি হলো: (ঘ) The teacher gave much advices before the exam.

• Complete sentence: Rajib has read Shakespeare's Hamlet.
- Bangla meaning: রাজীব শেক্সপিয়ারের হ্যামলেট পড়েছেন।

• ​Article এর নিয়মানুযায়ী,
- লেখকের নাম যদি তার রচিত সাহিত্যকর্ম বুঝাতে ব্যবহৃত হয়, তাহলে এর পূর্বে কোনো article বসে না।
- আবার গ্রন্থের নামের পূর্বে লেখকের নাম থাকলে তার পূর্বে কোনো article বসে না।

- প্রদত্ত প্রশ্নে গ্রন্থের (Hamlet) নামের পূর্বে লেখকের নাম Shakespeare আছে, তাই এর পূর্বে কোনো article বসবে না।

• More examples:
- She reads Nazrul's Agnibina.
- I have read Rabindranath.

সঠিক উত্তর হলো — খ) She has many informations about the event.

• Information হলো uncountable noun.
- Uncountable nouns-এর আগে many / few ব্যবহার করা হয় না।
- এর বদলে ব্যবহার করা হয় much / a little / some.

সঠিক বাক্য হবে: She has much information about the event.

অন্য বাক্যগুলো সঠিক:

ক) I need a little water to drink. 
→ water (uncountable) এর আগে a little ঠিক আছে।

গ) He made some mistakes in the test. 
→ mistakes (countable) এর আগে some ঠিক আছে।

ঘ) We have enough furniture for the room. 
→ furniture (uncountable) এর আগে enough ঠিক আছে।

• Article এর নিয়মানুযায়ী -

• সাধারণত পর্বতমালার নামের পূর্বে article হিসাবে the বসে।
যেমন: The Himalayas, The Bindhays ইত্যাদি।

- কিন্তু একটিমাত্র পর্বত বা পর্বতশৃঙ্গ এর নামের পূর্বে article হিসাবে the বসে না।
- যেহেতু  Mount Everest একটি মাত্র পর্বতশৃঙ্গের নাম সুতরাং এর পূর্বে কোন article বসবে না।

• In the sentence "I have no apples in my bag."
- The determiners are: both no and my.

- No: "no" is a quantifier (indicating zero quantity) modifying "apples".
- My: "A possessive determiner showing ownership."

​• Determiner:
- যে সকল word - Noun -এর নির্দেশক, নির্দিষ্টতা, অনির্দিষ্টতা, পরিমাণ, সংখ্যা, মালিকানা, না-বাচকতা ইত্যাদি নির্দেশ করে, সেগুলোকে Determiner বলে।
- Determiner - এর প্রধান কাজ হলো Noun -কে determine করা।

​• বিভিন্ন প্রকারের Determiner আছে, যেমন-
- Articles: A, An, The.
- Demonstrative: This, these, that, those.
- Possessive: My, your, his, her, etc.
- Interrogative: What, which, whose, etc.
- Quantifier: Some, any, many, much, more, less, few, fewer, little, a lot of, several, no, etc.
- General Ordinals: Last, next, other, the other, etc.
- Cardinal Numerals: One, Two, Three, Four, etc.
- Ordinal Numeral: First, Second, Third, Fourth, etc.

• A, An & The কে article বলে।
Article দুই প্রকার।
যেমন:
1. Indefinite: A, An.
2. Definite: The.
Article সাধারণত noun কে qualify করে।

Article এর নিয়মানুযায়ী শব্দের শুরুতে যদি vowel থাকে এবং তা যদি ইউ (U) এর মত উচ্চারিত হয় তাহলে vowel থাকা সত্ত্বেও তার পূর্বে a বসে।
যেমন: a ewe, a European, a uniform etc.

Complete sentence: He wants to study in a European Country.

Correct answer: an.
Complete sentence: The old woman is an honorable person. 

• Article এর নিয়মানুযায়ী, 
- সাধারণত Consonant sounds এর পূর্বে "a" এবং Vowel sounds এর পূর্বে "an" বসে।
- কিন্তু ইংরেজি শব্দের প্রথম বর্ণ Consonant হওয়া সত্ত্বেও এর উচ্চারণ যদি vowel- এর মত হয় তাহলে এর পূর্বে "a" না বসে "an" বসে।

• প্রদত্ত বাক্যে honorable এর উচ্চারণ 'অনারেবল - এর উচ্চারণ "a" (অ) দিয়ে শুরু।
- অর্থাৎ Vowel sounds এর মতো।
- তাই honorable এর পূর্বে "an" বসবে।

সাধারণত ‍adjective এর শুরুতে article বসে না। তবে যদি শুধু adjective এর শুরুতে ‍article ‘the’ বসানো হয় তাহলে তা plural common noun এ পরিণত হয়।
উপরোল্লেখিত উদাহরণে rich ও poor যথাক্রমে adjective. স্বাভাবিকভাবে এগুলোর পূর্বে article বসে না। কিন্তু এর পূর্বে the বসিয়ে তাকে plural common noun এ পরিণত করা হয়েছে।
এখানে the rich ও the poor অর্থ যথাক্রমে গরিবরা, ধনীরা। সুতরাং অপশন গ সঠিক উত্তর। আর অন্য অপশনে ‍article a/an থাকার কারণে সেগুলো উত্তর হবে না।

সঠিক উত্তরটি হলো - We will need only a little food.
- কারণ,
• Few / little এর সাথে only থাকলে অবশ্যই Only a few / only a little বসে।
যথা:
- Incorrect: Only few students are lazy.
- Correct: only a few students are lazy.
- Incorrect: We will need only little food.
- Correct: We will need only a little food.

যে word অন্য word এর নির্দিষ্টতা, অনির্দিষ্টতা, সংখ্যা, পরিমাণ ইত্যাদি নির্ধারণ করে দেয় তা ই Determiner.
Least - সবচেয়ে কম পরিমাণে, এটি একটি determiner।

Complete Sentence: A one-eyed beggar scared the children.

• শব্দের শুরুতে যদি vowel থাকে এবং তা যদি ইউ (U) বা ওয়া (O) এর মত উচ্চারিত হয় তাহলে তার পূর্বে an না বসে a বসে ।
-'O' এর উচ্চারণ "ওয়া" এর মত হলে (vowel হওয়া সত্ত্বেও) তার আগে an না বসে a বসে।
Example:
Inc: I saw an one-eyed man.
Cor: I saw a one-eyed man.

• কিন্তু O-এর উচ্চারণ "অ" বা "ঔ"-এর মত হলে তার আগে an বসে। 
Example:
Incorrect: He is a old man.
Correct: He is an old man.
Incorrect: He works as a operator in a company.
Correct: He works as an operator in a company.

সঠিক উত্তর: খ) She gave me some good advice.

• Advice হলো একটি Uncountable Noun. 
- অর্থাৎ এটার আগে a/an বসে না, এবং plural ও হয় না (advices বলা যায় না)।

Options,

ক) She gave me some good advices. → ভুল

- Advice হলো uncountable noun।
- Uncountable noun-এর plural বা “advices” বলা যায় না।

গ) She gave me many good advices. → ভুল

- Many ব্যবহার করা হয় countable noun-এর সঙ্গে।
- “Advice” uncountable, তাই “many” এখানে বসতে পারবে না।
- “advices” plural ব্যবহার করা।

ঘ) She gave me a good advices. → ভুল

- “A” ব্যবহার করা হয় singular countable noun-এর সঙ্গে।
- “Advice” uncountable,  এবং Uncountable noun-এর plural বা “advices” বলা যায় না।
- তাই এখানে একাধিক ভুল আছে

বাক্যের অর্থ: সে আমাকে কয়েকটি বিস্কুট দিয়েছিল।
সংখ্যা বা পরিমাণ বোঝাতে যে determinerগুলো ব্যবহৃত হয়, সেগুলোই quantifier বলে পরিচিত। এরকম শব্দগুলো হল: all, both, some, any, no, a lot of, a few ইত্যাদি।
এই বাক্যে a few শব্দটি সংখ্যা বুঝাতে ব্যবহার করা হচ্ছে, তাই, এটি quantifier।

• The sentence is - He has a little books on the shelf.

• books একটি countable noun, তাই এর পূর্বে determiner হিসেবে a little নয় few বসবে।
- তাই এই sentence টিতে determiner এর misuse হয়েছে।

• Correct sentence: He has a few books on the shelf.

• উল্লিখিত বাকি অপশনগুলো,
ক) All the employees were ready for the meeting.
- employees হলো plural countable noun, আর countable noun এর পূর্বে determiner হিসেবে all ব্যবহৃত হয়।

গ) They have little interest in watching horror movies.
- interest হলো uncountable noun, তাই এর পূর্বে determiner হিসেবে little ব্যবহৃত হয়েছে।

ঘ) Several cars are parked outside the building.
- cars, plural countable noun আর several determiner হিসেবে plural countable noun এর পূর্বেই বসে।

• Complete sentence: Seeing the baby girl, the mother in her awakened instantly.
- Bangla meaning: কন্যা শিশুটিকে দেখে তার মধ্যে তৎক্ষণাৎ মাতৃত্ব জেগে উঠল।

• Common noun দ্বারা যখন কোনো 'abstract idea' বোঝায় তখন তার পূর্বে the বসে।
- প্রশ্নে প্রদত্ত বাক্যে mother দ্বারা "মা" না বুঝিয়ে 'মাতৃত্ব' গুণটিকে বোঝানো হয়েছে, তাই এর পূর্বে the বসবে।

- সুতরাং, শূন্যস্থানে সঠিক উত্তরটি হবে- the.

• Complete sentence: I want to play the flute, but I can not play on flute.

​• ​Article এর নিয়মানুযায়ী,
- বাদ্যযন্ত্র বাজানো (play) বোঝাতে বাদ্যযন্ত্রের নামের পূর্বে the বসে।
​- তবে বাজানো (play) বোঝাতে play on ব্যবহার করলে কোন article বসবে না।

- কিন্তু কারো বাদ্যযন্ত্র থাকা বোঝাতে বাদ্যযন্ত্রের নামের পূর্বে a/an বসে।
​- যেমন: I have a flute.

​• Article:
- Articles মুলত Noun, Pronoun এর আগে বসে তাদের সংখ্যা এবং নির্দিষ্টতা, অনির্দিষ্টতা জ্ঞাপন করে।
- Articles কে প্রধানত দুই ভাগে ভাগ করে যায়।
- Indefinite Articles: A, An-এরা হলো Indefinite Article.
- Definite Articles: The হলো Definite Article.

Correct answer: They speak Japanese like the Japanese.

• ভাষার নামের আগে Article বসে না। যখন 'Japanese' শব্দটি ভাষা হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয়, তখন এর আগে কোনো "Article" বসে না।
- তবে জাতি বা জনগোষ্ঠীর আগে 'the' বসে 'Japanese শব্দটি জাপানের মানুষ বা জাতিকে বোঝায়, তখন তার আগে অবশ্যই Article 'the' বসাতে হয়।

- প্রদত্ত বাক্যে প্রথম 'Japanese' দ্বারা ভাষা এবং দ্বিতীয় 'Japanese' দ্বারা জাপানের মানুষ বা জাতিকে বোঝানো হয়েছে।
- তাই সঠিক বাক্যটি হলো- ঘ) They speak Japanese like the Japanese.

• Complete sentence: Only a little patience can solve this problem.

Patience - uncountable noun.
Uncountable noun–এর জন্য আমরা ব্যবহার করি:

- a little → কিছু (positive sense),
- little → খুব কম (negative sense).

• Only এর পর সর্বদাই a few বা a little ব্যবহৃত হয়। 
- Countable noun এর ক্ষেত্রে only a few এবং uncountable noun এর ক্ষেত্রে only a little ব্যবহৃত হয়।
- 'patience' uncountable noun তাই এর ক্ষেত্রে only a little ব্যবহৃত হয়েছে।

• Structure: 
- Only + a few/ a few of + plural countable noun +plural verb + ext.
- Only + a little/ a little of + uncountable noun + singular verb + ext.
