Parts of Speech

• Proper Noun:
- যে Noun দ্বারা নির্দিষ্টভাবে কোন ব্যক্তি, বস্তু, স্থান, সংস্থা, প্রতিষ্ঠান, পদবী ইত্যাদি বুঝানো হয় তাকে proper noun বলে।
- যেমন: Dhaka, Sun, Karim, Padma ইত্যাদি।

• অন্যদিকে,
- যে সব noun দ্বারা নির্দিষ্ট কোন ব্যক্তি, বস্তু বা স্থানের নাম না বুঝিয়ে একজাতীয় সবাইকেই বোঝায় তাদেরকে Common noun বলে।
- অর্থাৎ, Common noun হলো একটি সাধারণ শ্রেণি বা জাতের নাম, যা সাধারণভাবে কোনো ব্যক্তি, বস্তু, স্থান বা ধারণাকে নির্দেশ করে।
- যেমন:

ক) Teacher (শিক্ষক) - সাধারণ কোনো পেশার নাম (Common Noun).
খ) Car (গাড়ি) - সাধারণ কোনো যানবাহনের নাম (Common Noun).
গ) City (শহর) - সাধারণভাবে কোনো শহরের নাম (Common Noun).

Adverb: 
- A word that describes or gives more information about another word, esp. a verb, adjective, or other adverb, or about a phrase. 
- Adverb এমন একটি part of speech যা একটি verb, adjective, অন্য আর একটি adverb অথবা পুরো একটি বাক্যকে ও মডিফাই করতে পারে।
- অর্থাৎ, যেসব word noun বা pronoun ছাড়া অন্য যেকোন parts of speech, বিশেষ করে verb কে modify করে সেগুলোকে adverb বলে।
- কখন, কোথায়, কীভাবে, কেন এই প্রশ্নগুলোর উত্তর যা আসে তা adverb হয়ে থাকে।

Examples: 
- In the sentences, "She smiled cheerfully" and "He waited right outside the door," 'cheerfully' and 'right' are adverbs.
- উভয় বাক্যেই verb কে modify করেছে। 

• Considering the traffic, we arrived at the airport in good time.
- The underlined word is a Preposition.

- এখানে 'Considering' হচ্ছে Participle Preposition, যা ‍এখানে (in view of: taking into account) বা বিবেচনায় অর্থে ব্যবহৃত হচ্ছে।
- এই বাক্যে 'Considering' শব্দটি "the traffic" Noun phrase -এর পূর্বে বসে বাক্যের অন্য অংশের সাথে সম্পর্ক স্থাপন করছে।

• Considering (preposition):
- English Meaning: in view of: taking into account.
- Bangla Meaning: বিবেচনা করে দেখার পর।

• Participial Preposition:
- concerning/ respecting/regarding, considering, following, including, excluding, barring/excepting, ইত্যাদি participle গুলো noun phrase -এর পূর্বে বসে Preposition হিসেবে কাজ করে, তাই এগুলো হলো Participial Preposition.
- যেমন:
- He did well considering his limitations.
- He died following the incident.

• Parson (masculine) - পাদ্রী / ধর্ম যাজক।
- এটি হচ্ছে নিত্য পুরুষবাচক শব্দ যার কোন স্ত্রীবাচক শব্দ নেই।

• Nun:
- Bangla meaning: মঠবাসিনী; সন্ন্যাসিনী।
- It is a feminine gender.
- এর masculine gender হচ্ছে - Monk (সন্ন্যাসী)।

- Meaning: জাদুকর।
- এর Feminine form হলো- Witch (ডাইনি; মোহিনী নারী).

• Emperor [Masculine]
- English Meaning: The sovereign or supreme male monarch of an empire.
- Bangla Meaning: সম্রাট।
- এর Feminine gender হলো Empress (রানী)।

Started এর Subject হলো He।
Started এর object হলো teaching।
Complement হলো পরিপূরক। তা বুঝার সহজ টেকনিক হলো শব্দদ্বয়কে পাশাপাশি বসিয়ে দেখবে যদি একটি আরেকটির পরিপূরক হতে পারে তাহলে সেটি Complement।
যেমন:
He is a doctor. এর মধ্যে He = doctor হতে পারে। তাই doctor - Complement।
teaching = Hamlet কখনোই হতে পারে না। তাই এটি Complement নয়। বরং এটি teaching এর object।
বের করার পদ্ধতি: teaching কে কি বা কাকে দিয়ে প্রশ্ন করলে উত্তরে Hamlet পাওয়া যাবে।

Gerund চেনার উপায়ঃ
1) কিছু verb আছে যেমন- avoid, admit, confess, consider, deny, dislike, dispute, enjoy, excuse, give up, imagine, mind, recall, suggest, understand ইত্যাদি এর পর সাধারণত Gerund ব্যবহৃত হয়।
2) Gerund সাধারণত Subject, Complement, Object of a verb, Object of a preposition, Object of a prepositional verb, Part of a compound noun হিসেবে কাজ করতে পারে।
প্রশ্নোক্ত বাক্যে making শব্দটি object of a preposition আবার তা কিন্তু part of a compound noun. কিভাবে? কারন সম্পূর্ণ noun টি হলো earning money. বিষয়টা পরিষ্কার ভাবে বুঝার জন্য দেখুন- We had no drinking water left. বাক্যটিতে drinking water শব্দটি compound noun. আর drinking শব্দটি gerund.
3) অনেক সময় gerund শব্দটি দ্বারা স্থির কিছু বুঝায়, আর participle দ্বারা চলমান কিছু বুঝায়। যেমন, drinking water এর drinking শব্দটি gerund আর rolling stone এর rolling শব্দটি participle.
4) অনেক সময়, বাক্য থেকে participle সরিয়ে নিলে বাক্যটি অর্থপূর্ণ থাকে; কিন্তু gerund কে সরিয়ে নিলে বাক্যটি অর্থপূর্ণ থাকে না।

• Complete sentence: The teacher recommended that she study harder.

• Present Subjunctive:
- চাওয়া বা ইচ্ছা প্রকাশ করতে sub-ordinate clause -এ verb এর Base form ব্যবহারের রীতিই হলো Present Subjunctive.
- সাধারণত advise, suggest, necessary, ask, command, recommend, demand, urge, propose, insist, prefer, request, require, ইত্যাদি verb গুলো ব্যবহৃত হলে এই নিয়ম প্রযোজ্য হবে।
- এক্ষেত্রে that যুক্ত subordinate clause এ সর্বদাই verb এর Base form হবে এবং Negative এর ক্ষেত্রে base form এর পূর্বে শুধু not বসবে।
- be verb থাকলে শুধু 'be' বসবে।
- British English -এ should + base form ব্যবহৃত হয়ে থাকে।

• Structure: Subject + verb (any tense) + that + subject + verb এর base form + extension.

- The auditor recommended that the company revise its spending policies.

Article-এরপর একটি মাত্র word থাকলে সেটি noun হয়। সুতরাং breakthrough শব্দটি noun।
অর্থের দিক দিয়েও breakthrough (অভূতপূর্ব সাফল্য, প্রধান সাফল্য) শব্দটি noun.
Breakthrough (noun) - an important new discovery in something you are studying, especially one made after trying for a long time

• Adverb হলো এমন একটি word যা কোনো verb, Adjective বা অন্য কোনো adverb কে বিশেষায়িত করে।
• প্রদত্ত প্রশ্নের অপশনগুলোর মধ্যে গ) তে up শব্দটি live verb কে modify করেছে।
• সুতরাং অপশন গ) বাক্যের up শব্দটি একটি adverb।

She's too young to walk that far. Here, 'that' is - adverb.
- এখানে that “far” কে modify করছে।
- অর্থাৎ কতটা দূরত্ব? that (ততটা) → distance বা পরিমাণের মাত্রা নির্দেশ করছে।
- তাই এটি adverb.

Acquaint someone/yourself with something (phrasal verb): 
English Meaning - To make someone or yourself familiar with something. 
Bangla Meaning - পরিচিত হওয়া।

Example Sentences: 
- Take time to acquaint yourself with the rules.
- The tour guide acquainted the group with the landmarks and historical sites of the city.

Complete Sentence - As a librarian, part of her job is to acquaint patrons with the library's resources and services.

• As if / as though এর পূর্বে present indefinite tense থাকলে as if / as though এর পরে past indefinite এবং be verb থাকলে সবসময় were হয়।
Example:
He behaves as though he owned the house.
He speaks as if he were mad.

• As if / as though এর পূর্বে Past indefinite tense থাকলে as if / as though এর পরে past perfect হয়।
Example:
She smiled at me as if she had known me for years.

Complete sentence: She laughed as though she had heard a funny joke.

Other options,

ক) She laughs as though she had heard a funny joke.
- As if / as though এর পূর্বে present indefinite tense থাকলে as if / as though এর পরে past indefinite হবে।
- তাই এটি ভুল।

খ) She laughed as though she has heard a funny joke.
- “has heard” → Present Perfect, 
- Past tense “laughed” সঙ্গে Present Perfect → ভুল।

গ) She laughed as though she heard a funny joke.
- As if / as though এর পূর্বে Past indefinite tense থাকলে as if / as though এর পরে past perfect হয়।
- এখানে 'had heard' হলে সঠিক হতো।

• Dictum (Noun) - [singular form]
- English Meaning: a noteworthy statement/a formal pronouncement of a principle, proposition, or opinion.
- Bangla Meaning: বাণী; নীতিবাক্য; অনুশাসন।

Verb এর সাথে ing যােগ হয়ে যদি adjective এর কাজ করে অর্থাৎ Verb ও adjective এর কাজ করে, তাহলে তাকে present participle বলে।
সংক্ষেপে: present participle = Verb+ing = adjective = Verb-adjective.
Present participle দ্বারা চলমান sense বােঝায়।
এই বাক্যে rolling শব্দটি noun (stone) কে modify করেছে। তাই এটি একই সাথে Verb ও adjective এর কাজ করেছে।

• Need এবং dare মূল verb হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয় আবার modal হিসেবেও ব্যবহৃত হয় তাই এদের সাধারণ নাম semi-modals.
- Negative sentence এ ‘need’ modal auxiliary হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হলে need এর পরে not বসে এবং এর পরে to বসাতে হয়না।
- এক্ষেত্রে need এর সাথে কখনো s/es যুক্ত হয় না।

Correct Sentence - He need not go.

Complete sentence: The manager insisted on finishing the report by Friday.

• Insist on/upon/ Insist on doing something
- English Meaning: to keep doing something, even if it annoys other people, or people think it is not good for you.
- Bangla Meaning: পীড়াপীড়ি/জোর করা; জিদ/নির্বন্ধ করা; গোঁ ধরা; অতি আগ্রহ করা।

- He insisted on my going there.
- She insists on doing everything her own way.

• “insist on” মানে “জোর দেয়া / দাবি করা”, এবং এর পরে verb এর -ing আকার (gerund) আসে।

গণনার ভিত্তিতে noun দুই প্রকার:
Countable noun - যা গণনা করা যায় এবং গণনা করা যুক্তিসঙ্গত। যেমন: Mango.
Uncountable noun - যা গণনা করা যায় না। গেলেও তা যুক্তিসঙ্গত হয় না। যেমন: Rice.
Proper noun: নির্দিষ্ট কোন ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুর নামকে বুঝায়। যেমন: Shakib, Faruq ইত্যাদি।
Abstract noun: এমন noun যাকে দেখা যায় না, ছোঁয়া যায় না বরং অনুভব করা যায়। যেমন: Love, Beauty ইত্যাদি।
যেহেতু rice কোন নির্দিষ্ট নাম না। তাই এটি Proper noun নয়।
অন্যদিকে এটার যেহেতু অস্তিত্ব আছে তাই এটি Abstract noun ও হতে পারে না।
আর যদিও মনে হয় এটি গণনা করা যায় কিন্তু এই গণনা করাটা আসলে যুক্তিসঙ্গত নয়। তাই এটি countable noun ও হতে পারে না। সুতরাং এটি Uncountable noun.

• Article এর নিয়মানুযায়ী,
- School, college, market, bed, hospital, prison, mosque, temple, church, court of ইত্যাদি মূখ্য উদ্দেশ্যে (যেটা যেটার জন্য নির্মিত) ব্যবহৃত হলে কোন Article বসে না।
যেমন:
- I go to school.
- He went to market.
একই ভাবে - He went to hospital for treatment purposes.

• কিন্তু স্থানগুলো অন্য উদ্দেশ্যে ব্যবহৃত হলে এদের আগে Article বসে।
যেমন:
- I went to the hospital to visit my uncle.

- Complete Sentence: He went to the college to meet a friend.

• “College” যদি মূখ্য উদ্দেশ্যে (শিক্ষা গ্রহণের জন্য) ব্যবহৃত হয়, তাহলে zero article হবে।

Example: He goes to college every day.

কিন্তু এখানে বাক্যটি বলছে যে তিনি একজন বন্ধুকে দেখতে গিয়েছিলেন, অর্থাৎ college এর মূল উদ্দেশ্য নয়, অন্য উদ্দেশ্যে গিয়েছেন। তাই এর আগে the article ব্যবহার করতে হবে।

• Is this your own cat?
- Here, "own" is an Emphasizing adjective.

• Emphasizing adjective:
- যে শব্দগুলো জোরসূচক adjective রূপে ব্যবহৃত হয়, তাদেরকে Emphasizing adjective বলে।

- এখানে, Is this your own cat? দ্বারা বোঝানো হয়েছে - এটি কি তোমার নিজেরই বিড়াল? অর্থাৎ, প্রশ্নটিতে জোর দিতে own ব্যবহার করা হয়েছে।
- তাই এটি Emphasizing adjective.

Down শব্দটি বিভিন্ন parts of speech হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হতে পারে। যেমন:
• Down (Adverb): 
- Down went the Titanic বা The Titanic went down.
- এখানে Down adverb, কারণ down এখানে verb (went) কে modify করছে।

• Down (Adjective):
- The down train is late today.
- down শব্দটি train কে modify করছে।
- তাই, down শব্দটি একটি adjective.

• Down (Verb):
- The pilot had to down the aircraft in an emergency landing.
- ‘Down’ শব্দটি বাক্যে verb হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয়েছে।

• Down (Preposition): 
- Tears ran down her face.
- এখানে down শব্দটি noun 'her face' এর পূর্বে বসে বাক্যের অন্যান্য শব্দের সাথে এর সম্পর্ক স্থাপন করছে বিধায় এটি preposition.

→ She fell down some stairs and broke her wrist.
- এই sentence এ down শব্দটি noun 'some stairs' এর পূর্বে বসে বাক্যের অন্যান্য শব্দের সাথে এর সম্পর্ক স্থাপন করছে বিধায় এটি preposition.

• Complete sentence: Somebody must have informed on us.
- Bangla meaning: নিশ্চয়ই কেউ আমাদের বিরুদ্ধে খবর দিয়েছে।

• Inform against/on someone
- English Meaning: If you inform on/against someone, you give the police information, usually secretly, about that person, showing that he or she has done something wrong.
- Bangla Meaning: (আইন সম্বন্ধীয়) (পুলিশের কাছে) কারো বিরুদ্ধে অভিযোগ আনা বা নালিশ করা; অপরাধ সূচিত করা।

- Here, ‘believing’ is- Gerund as a complement of a verb.

- উল্লিখিত বাক্যে 'believing' - verb (is) এর Object হিসেবে বসে subject complement রূপে কাজ করেছে, তাই এটি Gerund.
- এখানে Linking verb (is) -এর complement হিসেবে Gerund হয়েছে।
- অর্থাৎ,এখানে Seeing -ই হচ্ছে believing (believing renaming the subject "Seeing").
- এটি subject 'Seeing' কে modify করছে না, তাই এটি Participle হবে না।

• Gerund:
- Verb -এর সাথে ing যোগ হয়ে যদি noun -এর কাজ করে অর্থাৎ, একই সাথে Verb ও noun -এর কাজ করে, তখন তাকে Gerund বলে।
- সহজে → Gerund = Verb + ing = noun = Verb + noun -এর কাজ করে।

• একই ব্যক্তিকে নির্দেশ করছে নাকি ভিন্ন ভিন্ন ব্যক্তিকে সেটা বোঝার সহজ উপায় হচ্ছে - দুইটি subject/ noun এর পরের verb টির দিকে লক্ষ্য রাখা।

• 'Monarch' is a common gender.

• Monarch (noun):
- English Meaning: a person who reigns over a kingdom or empire, such as a sovereign ruler; a king or queen.
- Bangla Meaning: সর্বোচ্চ শাসক (রাজা, রানি, সম্রাট বা সম্রাজ্ঞী) অধিরাজ; সার্বভৌম।

- Noun টি পুংবাচক বা স্ত্রীবাচক উভয়কেই বুঝালে তা Common Gender হয়।

‘উপরে’ বুঝাতে on, above, over তিনটি preposition এরই ব্যবহার দেখা যায়।
