Sentence Correction

• উল্লিখিত অপশনগুলোর মধ্যে - None of the money were spent - এই বাক্যে correction এর প্রয়োজন আছে।
- কারণ, এখানে were এর ব্যবহার ভুল।
- were এর স্থলে was ব্যবহৃত হলে বাক্যটি সঠিক হবে।
- Correct sentence: None of the money was spent.

• Oxford Learners Dictionary, Cliffs TOFEL, Cambridge ইত্যাদি উৎস অনুসারে,
1. none + of the + singular noun + singular verb.
2. none + of the + plural countable noun + plural verb.
অর্থাৎ, দুই ধরনের ব্যবহারই রয়েছে।

• তবে, Cambridge dictionary এর মতে,
- informal speaking এর ক্ষেত্রে লোকজন অনেক সময় none of এর পরে plural verb ব্যবহার করে।
- তবে, formal English এ 'none of' subject হলে singular verb ব্যবহার করা হয়।

• None যুক্ত বাক্যের verbটি singular হবে নাকি plural তা নির্ভর করে বাক্যস্থিত noun এর উপর যেটিকে none follow কছে।
- none + of the + uncountable noun + singular verb.
- এই নিয়মানুযায়ী, গ) বাক্যে নিয়মানুযায়ী, were এরস্থলে was এর ব্যবহার সঠিক, কারণ, money uncountable noun.

Example:
- None of that surprises me.
- Indeed, none of his novels is well-shaped or well-written.
- None of the products have been tested on animals and all the bottles are recyclable. (informal)

• ইংরেজি গ্রামারের ক্ষেত্রে formal নিয়মকে অধিক গুরুত্ব দেওয়া বাঞ্ছনীয়।

• অন্য অপশনগুলোর মধ্যে - 
ক) Some of the cake was eaten.
- Some + of the + singular noun + singular verb.
- Some + of the + plural countable noun + plural verb.

Example: - Some of the money was given to the poor.

খ) Either of the girls can attend.
- Either of the + plural noun + singular verb.
- Either of দ্বারা দুয়ের যেকোনো একটিকে নির্দেশ করে।

Example: - Either of the roads leads in the same direction.

ঘ) Neither of the answers is correct.
- Neither + of + plural noun + singular verb.
- সাধারণত Neither of এর পরে plural noun বা pronoun এবং singular verb বসে।
- Neither দ্বারা দুইয়ের কোনটিই নয় বুঝানো হয়।

Example:- Neither of the two men was strong.

• Correct sentence: গ) The doctor took my pulse. (41st BCS Preli)

• Take/check/feel someone's pulse
- English Meaning: to measure how fast someone's heart is beating; to hold someone’s wrist and count how many times the heart beats in one minute.
- Bangla Meaning: হাতের কবজির ধমনিতে হাত রেখে নাড়িস্পন্দনের হার গণনা করা।

• কারো কবজি ধরে হার্টবিট পরীক্ষা করা অর্থে- Take/check/feel someone’s pulse বলা হয়।

• The sentence is - We hardly heard no noise in the forest.

• Explanation:
- "Hardly" নিজেই একটি negative অর্থবাচক শব্দ, তাই এর পরে "no" ব্যবহার করা যাবে না।
- Correct sentence is - We hardly heard any noise in the forest.

• উল্লিখিত বাকি অপশনগুলো,
ক) She gave me a piece of useful advice.
- advice একটি uncountable noun, তাই এর plural হয় না।
- এটিকে plural করতে হলে সঠিক determiner বসিয়ে plural করতে হয়।
- যেমন: a piece of advice, two pieces of advice, some advice, etc.

খ) They brought plenty of food for the picnic.
- "Plenty of" সঠিক determiner, যা uncountable noun "food" কে determine করতে ব্যবহৃত হয়েছে।
- Plenty of (প্রচুর; অঢেল) যা countable/ uncountable noun উভয়কে determine করে।

ঘ) Several students participated in the competition.
- এখানে Several (কিছু সংখ্যক) সঠিক determiner, যা plural countable noun "students" কে determine করতে ব্যবহৃত হয়েছে।

• Causative Verb:
- Subject যখন নিজে কাজ না করে অন্যকে দিয়ে কাজ করিয়ে নেয় তখন এই অর্থে causative verb ব্যবহৃত হয়। 
- Help, Get, Have, Let, Make ইত্যাদি বহুল প্রচলিত causative verb.
- Make, have, get প্রভৃতি যোগে অনেক verb- কে causative verb এ পরিণত করা যায়।

• Causative Verb হিসাবে 'help' এর  নিয়মানুযায়ী - I helped him carry the boxes. বাক্যটি  সঠিক।
• Causative Verb হিসাবে 'Help' এর ব্যবহার- 
- Help এর পর ব্যক্তি বা বস্তু থাকলে verb এর base form বসে অথবা to + verb বসে।
- যেমন-
- I helped him carry the boxes
- I helped him to carry the boxes

• অন্য অপশনগুলোর মধ্যে - 
• Causative verb হিসাবে 'Make' এর ব্যবহার - 
- Make এরপর কোনো ব্যক্তি বা বস্তু থাকলে verb এর base form বসে।
- Correct sentence: He made me laugh with his jokes.

• Causative verb হিসেবে Let এর ব্যবহার - 
- Subject + let + ব্যক্তিবাচক/ বস্তুবাচক/ বিষয় object + V1
- যেমন - He did not let me see what he was reading.

• Causative verb হিসেবে ‘Have’ এর ব্যবহার -
- Subject + have/has + object +verb এর past participle এই structure টি ব্যবহৃত হয়।
- বস্তুর ক্ষেত্রে - Akhi got her work done by Pakhi.

- তবে, ব্যক্তির ক্ষেত্রে bare infinite verb বসে।
- যেমন - The teacher has the students complete the project on time.

এছাড়াও, 
• Causative verb হিসাবে get এর structure - 
- Subject + get + বস্তুবাচক object +verb এর past participle এই structure টি ব্যবহৃত হয়।
- Subject + get + ব্যক্তিবাচক object + infinitive (to + v1)  এই structure টি ব্যবহৃত হয়।
- যেমন - Let's get our car washed nicely.

• Correct sentence: No one, including the experts, solves the puzzle.

​• Subject-Verb agreement অনুযায়ী:
​- With, together with, along with, as well as, in addition to, accompanied with/by, and not, including, excluding, but, except ইত্যাদি দ্বারা কোনো noun বা pronoun যুক্ত হলে, verb সর্বদা প্রথম subject (noun/ pronoun) অনুযায়ী হবে।
- অর্থাৎ, প্রথম noun/ pronoun টি singular হলে verb টি singular হবে।
- আবার প্রথম noun/ pronoun টি plural হলে verb টি plural হবে।

- যেমন: No one including the experts solves the puzzle.
- এখানে প্রথম subject 'No one' (singular), তাই singular verb 'solves' ব্যবহার সঠিক।
- The phrase "including the experts" is a prepositional phrase that does not affect the verb. It adds extra information.

- অন্য অপশনগুলো Subject-Verb agreement অনুযায়ী ভুল।
ক) No one, including the experts, could solving the puzzle.
- could solve হলে সঠিক হতো।

খ) No one, including the experts, can solves the puzzle.
- 'can solves' হবে না, can এর পরে verb এর base form বসে।

গ) No one, including the experts, solve the puzzle.
- Subject singular, তাই verb -এর সাথে 's' যুক্ত হবে।

সঠিক উত্তর: ক) easy to solve.

মূল বাক্য: "It is easy to solve this problem."
পুনর্লিখিত বাক্য: This problem is easy to solve.

• Adjective (easy, difficult, hard, tough, nice ইত্যাদি) এর পরে যখন কোনো কাজের সহজতা/কঠিনতা বোঝানো হয়, তখন to + infinitive (to solve, to do, to understand ইত্যাদি) ব্যবহৃত হয়।

Structure: Subject + be + adjective + to-infinitive.

Example: 
- The question is easy to answer.
- English is difficult to learn.
- This book is interesting to read.

অন্য অপশনগুলো ভুল:
খ) easy for solving → ভুল। "for + gerund" এখানে ব্যবহার হয় না।

গ) easy in solving → ভুল। "in + gerund" এরকম কোনো standard structure নেই easy/difficult-এর সঙ্গে।

ঘ) easy solving → ভুল। Adjective-এর পরে সরাসরি gerund (solving) ছাড়া "to" ছাড়া বসে না এই ক্ষেত্রে। 

• Correct Sentence: A pair of shoes is on the rack. (অপশন গ).
-কিছু Noun আছে যেমন: Brace, Gross, Dozen, Pair, Hundred, Thousand, Score, Fathom, Head ইত্যাদি যাদের আগে নির্দিষ্ট সংখ্যাবাচক বিশেষণ থাকলে Verb Singular হয়।

• উল্লিখিত বাকি অপশনগুলো,
(ক) যখন কোন Infinitive, Gerund, Verbal Noun, Clause বা Phrase কোন Sentence এর Subject হয় তখন Verb Singular হয়। 
- Correct Sentence: To swim is a good exercise.

(খ) একক দৈর্ঘ্য, পরিমাপ বা স্থান বুঝালে Subject দেখতে Plural হলেও Verb Singular হয়।
- Correct Sentence: Fifty miles is a long way.

(ঘ) Either --- or, Neither --- nor দ্বারা Singular Subject যুক্ত হলে Verb Singular হয়।
Correct Sentence: Either he or his brother is guilty.

• It is no use যুক্ত incomplete sentence কে complete করার নিয়ম:-
- it is of no use (it’s no use doing something) এর পরে কোনো preposition/ infinitive বা অন্য কিছু বসে না।
- এরপর সরাসরি verb আসে এবং এর সাথে ing যুক্ত হয়।

• সুতরাং, নিয়মানুযায়ী, Correct sentence: It’s no use pretending that you don’t care.

• More examples: 

- It's no use crying over spilled milk
- It's no use locking the door now
- It's no use trying again
- It's no use arguing with a drunk.

• Correct sentence: The army reinforced its positions along the LOC lest a surprise offensive should catch them unprepared.
Bangla Meaning: অপ্রত্যাশিত হামলা যেন তাদের অপ্রস্তুত অবস্থায় না ফেলে, তাই সেনাবাহিনী এলওসি'তে অবস্থান শক্তিশালী করে।

• Lest (conjunction)
- "Lest" is used to express the idea of "for fear that" or "in order to prevent".
- শব্দটি মূলত: একটি Conjunction - যার অর্থ পাছে (কোনো কিছু ঘটে) এই ভয়ে।
- Lest এর পরে subject থাকলে subject -এর পূর্বে Should/ might + base form অথবা Should/ might be + V₃ বসে।
- Lest negative অর্থ প্রদান করে, এ কারণে Lest যুক্ত বাক্যে should  -এর পরে no/not/never বসে না Lest এরপর subject থাকলে এর should পূর্বে বসাতে হয়।
- উল্লেখ্য যে, Should না থাকলে might বসবে।

• Structures:
- Lest + 1^st subject + should/might + base form + complement.
- Lest + 1^st subject + should/might + be + V₃ + complement.

• More Examples:
- He spoke in whispers lest anyone should overhear their conversation.
- They left early lest they should get caught in the storm.
- I avoid sugar lest I should fall sick again.
