Past Tense

• Complete sentence: They had been working on the project for hours before we arrived.

• Past perfect continuous tense:
- অতীতে কোন কাজ/ঘটনা কিছু কাল ধরে চলছিল বুঝাতে Past perfect continuous tense হয়।
- Structure: Sub + had been + verb এর present participle (root form of verb + ing) + ext.

- প্রদত্ত বাক্যে, "They had been working"- এটি একটি ক্রিয়া যা অতীতে একটি নির্দিষ্ট সময় পর্যন্ত চলছিল। তাই এটি Past perfect continuous tense হবে।
- (had been + verb-ing) emphasizes the ongoing process before another past event (before we arrived).

- যেমন:
- We had been waiting for the bus when it suddenly started raining.
- He had been studying all day when his friends came over.

• অতীত নির্দেশক কোন শব্দ বা phrase যেমন (yesterday, ago, long since, last night, last week, last month, last year, the day before yesterday ইত্যাদি) Past Indefinite Tense নির্দেশ করে।
- তাই নিয়ম অনুযায়ী এদের পর verb এর past form হয়। 
যেমন: I came home last night.

Complete sentence: They played football yesterday.

• আবার, Past Indefinite Tense যদি interrogative হয় তবে structure হবে: Wh-questions + did + V1 + extension +? 

Example: What movie did you watch last night?

◉ Complete sentence - At that time, he had been learning Spanish for five months. 
- এখানে, 'Spanish' শেখার কাজটি সেই মুহূর্তের আগে থেকেই শুরু হয়েছিল এবং নির্দিষ্ট সময় ধরে চলছিল। তাই, Past perfect continuous tense ব্যবহৃত হয়েছে। 
- Past Continuous Tense শুধু একটি নির্দিষ্ট মুহূর্তে ক্রিয়া চলছিল তা প্রকাশ করে, কিন্তু সেটা কতক্ষণ ধরে চলছিল তা বুঝায় না। তাই, Past Continuous Tense হবে না। 

Past perfect continuous tense: 
- Past perfect continuous tense ব্যবহার করা হয় এমন একটি কাজ বোঝাতে যা অতীতে শুরু হয়েছিল এবং অন্য একটি ঘটনা বা সময়ের আগে থেকে চলছিল, এমনকি সেই দ্বিতীয় ঘটনার সময়েও চলছিল। 
- Structure: Subject + had + been + verb + ing.

Examples: 
- I had been working at the company for five years when I got the promotion. 
- She had been studying for two hours when he arrived.

Correct answer: Since he was ill, he could not go to school.

• Because of যুক্ত Simple Sentence কে Complex Sentence এ পরিণত করার নিয়ম:
- “Because of” সাধারণত noun phrase বা gerund নিয়ে শুরু হয়।
- “Because of” সরিয়ে Since বসাতে হয়।
- তারপরে subject + verb বসাতে হয়।
- বাক্যের শেষে comma দিয়ে মূল clause বসাতে হয়।
- Structure: Since + subject + verb + (adjective/noun/phrase), + main clause.

Other options:
ক) Since he is ill, he could not go to school.
- ভুল কারণ, Principal Clause টি Past tense এ থাকায় Subordinate Clause টিও Past tense এ হবে।

খ) Since he was ill, he can not go to school.
- ভুল কারণ, Principal Clause ও Subordinate Clause একই Tense এ হবে।

ঘ) Since he could not go to school, he was ill.
- ভুল কারণ,  এই বাক্যটির অর্থ সম্পূর্ণ বদলে গেছে। এই বাক্যে কারণ এবং ফলাফল উল্টে দেওয়া হয়েছে। মূল বাক্যের অর্থ হলো— অসুস্থতার কারণে সে স্কুলে যেতে পারেনি। এই অপশনের অর্থ হলো— স্কুলে যেতে না পারার কারণে সে অসুস্থ ছিল।

• Correct Answer: ক) had departed.

- The train had departed before we arrived at the station.
- আমরা যখন স্টেশনে গেলাম তখন ট্রেন টি ছেড়ে গিয়েছিল।

• অতীতকালের দুটি ঘটনার মধ্যে যেটি আগে ঘটে সেটি Past perfect tense হয় এবং পরেরটি past indefinite tense হয়।
- Before এর আগের বাক্য এবং after এর পরের বাক্য Past Perfect Tense হয়।
- Before এর আগের বাক্যে Past Perfect Tense হলে, পরের বাক্যে Past Indefinite Tense হবে।

• Correct answer: Rina said that she had finished her homework before dinner.
- Bangla meaning: রিনা বলেছিল যে, সে রাতের খাবারের আগে হোমওয়ার্ক শেষ করেছিল।

• Past perfect tense:
- অতীতে দুইটি কাজ সম্পন্ন হলে যে কাজটি অধিক পূর্বে সম্পন্ন হয় সেটি Past perfect tense হবে।

- Structure of past perfect tense: Subject + had+ Verb এর past participle + rest of the part.
- Rina said that she had finished her homework before dinner.

• এই বাক্যে অতীত কালে সংঘটিত দুইটি কাজের বর্ণনা দেওয়া হয়েছে।
- প্রথম কাজটি হলো: রিনা হোমওয়ার্ক শেষ করেছে,
- দ্বিতীয় কাজটি হলো: রিনা সেটা বলেছে (said)।

• সুতরাং,"said" - অতীতে সংঘটিত কাজ, তাই এটি Simple Past Tense form এ হয়েছে।
- "had finished" - তারও আগে সংঘটিত কাজ (হোমওয়ার্ক শেষ করা), তাই এটি Past Perfect Tense form এ হয়েছে।

Correct answer: saw.
Complete sentence: They still cherish the memory of the evening they first saw the ocean.
- বাক্যের অতীত কালের ঘটনার কথা বলা হয়েছে। এই কাজটি অতীতে শুরু হয়ে শেষ হয়ে গেছে এবং এর ফল এখন বিদ্যমান নেই।
- এই ধরনের অতীত কাজ বোঝাতে Past Indefinite Tense ব্যবহৃত হয়। 

• অতীত কালের কোন কাজ যার ফল এখন আর বিদ্যমান নেই এমন বোঝাতে, past indefinite tense ব্যবহৃত হয়।
- বাক্যে অতীতে সমুদ্র দেখার স্মৃতির কথা বুঝাচ্ছে তাই past indefinite tense ব্যবহৃত হবে।
- তাই শূন্যস্থানে see এর past form হিসেবে saw বসেছে।

Correct answer: Past perfect tense
- এখানে প্রথম "had" টি Auxiliary verb এবং ২য় 'had' টি "Principal verb" হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয়েছে। নিয়মানুসারে  Auxiliary verb "had" এর পর মূল verb এর past participle form হিসেবে 'had' ব্যবহৃত হওয়ায় এটি Past perfect tense.

• Past Perfect Tense:
- অতীত কালে দুটি কাজ সম্পন্ন হয়ে থাকলে তাদের মধ্যে যেটি আগে ঘটেছিল তা Past perfect tense হয় এবং যেটি পরে হয়েছিল তা Simple Past Tense হয়।
Structure: Subject + had + verb এর Past Participle Form + বাকি অংশ (যদি থাকে)।

• Correct answer: They watched the new movie last weekend.

• এই বাক্যে অতীত নির্দেশক শব্দ "last weekend" বসেছে।
- প্রদত্ত sentence টি past indefinite tense এর হবে। 
- তাই, এখানে watch এর watched (past form) বসবে।

• Structure: Subject + Verb এর past form + Object.

• Example sentence:
- He went there.
- Rafiq played football yesterday.

• Bear শব্দটির দুটি অর্থ হতে পারে। 
১.জন্ম দেয়া এবং
২. বহন করা/ সহ্য করা।

• অর্থভেদে Bear এর দুটি past participle form হয়ে থাকে।
- জন্ম দেয়া অর্থে bear এর past participle হচ্ছে - Born. 
- বহন করা/ সহ্য করা অর্থে bear এর past participle হচ্ছে - Borne. 
- কিন্তু অর্থভেদে Bear এর past form সব সময় Bore হবে।

• Born is the past participle of the verb bear only when it's used in the sense of birth.
• Borne is the past participle of the verb bear in all senses except the one related to birth.

সঠিক উত্তর: খ) were being followed.

Complete sentence: There was somebody walking behind us. I thought we were being followed.
বাক্যের অর্থ: আমাদের পিছনে কেউ হাঁটছিল। আমি ভেবেছিলাম আমাদের অনুসরণ করা হচ্ছে।

• প্রশ্নোল্লিখিত বাক্যে কর্তার উল্লেখ না থাকায় বাক্যটি Passive হবে এবং যেহেতু বাক্যটি অতীতে কোনো চলমান ঘটনার বর্ণনা দিচ্ছে তাই এটির Passive form Continuous হবে।

এটি Past Continuous Passive Voice এর Structure অনুসরণ করে: were + being + V₃ (followed)
- Context অনুযায়ী এটা Passive Form + Continuous Tense.

অন্য অপশনগুলো:

ক) were following - active form; অর্থ হয় আমরা কাউকে follow করছিলাম — যা বাক্যের অর্থের বিপরীত।

গ) were followed - Simple Past Passive (চলমান action বোঝায় না), অর্থ হয় আমাদের follow করা হয়েছিল (একবারের ঘটনা) — কিন্তু এখানে চলমান অবস্থা (walking behind) বোঝানো হচ্ছে।

ঘ) have been followed - present perfect passive; এটি present-এর সাথে সম্পর্কিত, কিন্তু বাক্যটি (I thought) past tense-এ আছে, তাই tense মিলছে না।

◉ Complete Sentence - He said that he had watched the movie before he read the book. 
- বাক্যটিতে 'before' থাকায় বোঝা যাচ্ছে যে প্রথম কাজটি (movie দেখা) Past Perfect Tense-এ হবে, এবং দ্বিতীয় কাজটি (book পড়া) Simple Past-এ থাকবে।

Past Perfect Tense: 
- Past Perfect Tense একটি অতীতের ঘটনার আগের আরেকটি অতীত ঘটনা বোঝাতে ব্যবহৃত হয়।
অর্থাৎ, দুইটি অতীত ঘটনা ঘটলে, যে ঘটনা আগে ঘটেছে সেটি Past Perfect হবে, এবং পরে হওয়া ঘটনাটি Simple Past হবে।

Structure: 
Active Voice: Subject + had + past participle (V₃)
I had finished my work before my father came.

Passive Voice: Subject + had + been + past participle (V₃)
The work had been finished before my father came.

Past Perfect Tense সাধারণত "Before" এবং "After" conjunction-সমূহের এর মাধ্যমে চেনা যায়।

Complete sentence: We saw a shooting star last night.
- এখানে সময় নির্দেশ করছে last night, তাই এখানে 'see' এর Past Indefinite Tense ব্যবহার হয়েছে।

• অতীত নির্দেশক কোন শব্দ বা phrase যেমন (yesterday, ago, long since, last night, last week, last month, last year, the day before yesterday ইত্যাদি) Past Indefinite Tense নির্দেশ করে।
- তাই নিয়ম অনুযায়ী এদের পর verb এর past form হয়। 
যেমন: I came home last night.

• আবার, Past Indefinite Tense যদি interrogative হয় তবে structure হবে: Wh-questions + did + V1 + extension +?

- Sentence টিতে সময় নির্দেশক শব্দ "ago" Past Indefinite Tense এর নিয়ম অনুসারে এখানে verb হিসেবে 'went' বসেছে।

• Past Indefinite Tense:
- অতীত কালে কোন কাজ ঘটেছিল এবং তার ফল এখন আর বর্তমান নেই এরূপ বুঝালে verb এর Past Indefinite Tense বা Simple Past Tense হয়।
- যখন sentence এ yesterday, ago, last night, last week, last month, that day, as soon as ইত্যাদি সময় নির্দেশক শব্দ থাকে, তখন সাধারণত verb এর Simple Past form ব্যবহার করা হয়।

উল্লিখিত বাকি অপশনগুলো,
ক) I have gone to Sri Lanka a few days ago.
 - ভুল, Present Perfect কখনো নির্দিষ্ট অতীত সময় (yesterday, ago, last night, last week, last month, that day, as soon as)  এর সাথে ব্যবহার করা যায় না।

খ) I will go to Sri Lanka a few days ago.
- অতীত সময় নির্দেশক শব্দ (yesterday, ago, last night, last week, last month, that day, as soon as) এর সাথে Future Tense ব্যবহার করা যায় না।

গ) I go to Sri Lanka a few days ago.
- অতীত সময় নির্দেশক শব্দ (yesterday, ago, last night, last week, last month, that day, as soon as) এর সাথে Present tense এর ব্যবহার সঠিক নয়।

Correct answer: She met him three years ago.
- Sentence টিতে সময় নির্দেশক শব্দ "ago" থাকায় Past Indefinite Tense এর নিয়ম অনুসারে এখানে verb হিসেবে 'met' বসেছে।

• Past Indefinite Tense
- Sentence টিতে সময় নির্দেশক শব্দ "ago" Past Indefinite Tense এর নিয়ম অনুসারে এখানে verb হিসেবে 'met' বসেছে।
- অতীত কালে কোন কাজ ঘটেছিল এবং তার ফল এখন আর বর্তমান নেই এরূপ বুঝালে verb এর Past Indefinite Tense বা Simple Past Tense হয়।
- যখন sentence এ yesterday, ago, last night, last week, last month, that day, as soon as ইত্যাদি সময় নির্দেশক শব্দ থাকে, তখন সাধারণত verb এর Simple Past form ব্যবহার করা হয়।

Other options:
ক) meet
- অতীত সময় (yesterday, ago, last night, last week, last month, that day, as soon as) ইত্যাদি সময় নির্দেশক শব্দ থাকে, তখন সাধারণত verb এর Simple Past form ব্যবহার করা হয়। তাই এটি সঠিক নয়।

গ) will meet
- অতীত সময় (yesterday, ago, last night, last week, last month, that day, as soon as) ইত্যাদি সময় নির্দেশক শব্দ থাকে, তখন সাধারণত verb এর Simple Past form ব্যবহার করা হয়। তাই এখানে future tense এর ব্যবহার সঠিক নয়।

ঘ) would meet
- অতীত সময় (yesterday, ago, last night, last week, last month, that day, as soon as) ইত্যাদি সময় নির্দেশক শব্দ থাকে, তখন সাধারণত verb এর Simple Past form ব্যবহার করা হয়। তাই এখানে past tense এর ব্যবহার সঠিক নয়।

- তাই নিয়ম অনুযায়ী এদের পর verb এর past form হয়।
- যেমন: I came home last night.

Other options:
ক) go
- অতীত নির্দেশক কোন শব্দ বা phrase যেমন ( the day before yesterday) থাকায় বাক্যটি  Past Indefinite Tense নির্দেশ করে। তাই এটি সঠিক নয়।

খ) will go
- অতীত নির্দেশক কোন শব্দ বা phrase যেমন ( the day before yesterday) থাকায় বাক্যটি  Past Indefinite Tense নির্দেশ করে। তাই Future tense এর ব্যবহার সঠিক নয়।

ঘ) have gone
- অতীত নির্দেশক কোন শব্দ বা phrase যেমন ( the day before yesterday) থাকায় বাক্যটি  Past Indefinite Tense নির্দেশ করে। তাই Present perfect tense এর ব্যবহার সঠিক নয়।

• Correct Answer: Strode.

• Stride (noun, verb)
- Bangla Meaning: লম্বা লম্বা পা ফেলে চলা।দুই পা ফাঁক করে দাঁড়ানো বা বসা।
- English Meaning: to move with or as if with long steps.

- (past tense) strode [স্ট্রোড্‌] past participle (বিরল প্রয়োগ) stridden [স্ট্রিড্‌ন্]

• Complete sentence: You didn't go to watch the game yesterday, did you?

• Past indefinite tense এর ক্ষেত্রে:
- অতীত কালে কোন কাজ ঘটেছিল এবং তার ফল এখন আর বর্তমান নেই এরূপ বুঝালে verb এর Past Indefinite Tense বা Simple Past Tense হয়।
- কোনো sentence এ যখন yesterday, ago, last night, last week, last month, that day, as soon as, ইত্যাদি সময় নির্দেশক শব্দ থাকে, তখন সাধারণত verb এর Simple Past form ব্যবহার করা হয়।
- Auxiliary verb হিসেবে didi/didn't + verb এর base form ব্যবহৃত হয়।

- প্রদত্ত বাক্যে সময় নির্দেশক শব্দ "yesterday" থাকায় এবং tag question হিসেবে did you? ব্যবহৃত হওয়ায় শূন্যস্থানে 'didn't go' বসবে।

• Correct Answer: ক) Began.

• Present - Past - Past Participle
arise - arose - arisen,
bear - bore - borne,
begin - began - begun,
bet - bet - bet,
bind - bound - bound,

bleed - bled - bled,
blow - blew - blown,
breed - bred - bred,
broadcast - broadcast - broadcast,
burst - burst - burst,

Other Options:
খ) Beginned: English এ "Begin" এর past tense "beginned" নয়, তাই এটি ভুল।
গ) Begun: "Begun" হলো past participle, direct past tense নয়, তাই এটি ভুল।
ঘ) Beginning: "Beginning" হলো present participle বা noun form, past tense নয়, তাই এটি ভুল।

- Correct answer: was watching.
- Complete sentence: I fell asleep while I was watching TV.

• অতীতের দুটি সমসাময়িক ঘটনা while / when / as দ্বারা যুক্ত হলে while /when/ as যুক্ত অংশটি past continuous tense হয়, অপর অংশের হয় ভবিষ্যৎ কাল past indefinite. 
- তবে কখনো কখনো when যুক্ত অংশ past indefinite হলে অপর অংশ past continuous হয়।
- While দ্বারা দুইটি বাক্যাংশ যুক্ত হলে -
- While এর পূর্বে অংশ টি past indefinite এ হলে, এরপরের অংশে past continuous tense হয়।
- while যুক্ত অংশটি Past continuous tense হলে অপরটি Past indefinite tense হয়।
