• Principal clause -এর verb টি past tense -এ থাকলে sub-ordinate clause -এর verb টিও past tense -এ হবে।
- সাধারণত That, what, which, where, when, though, although, if, as if, unless, since ইত্যাদি দ্বারা sub-ordinate clause -টি শুরু হয়।
- যেমন:
- He promised that he would come next Monday.
- I never thought I would see you again.

• তাই, sequence of tense -এর নিয়মানুযায়ী প্রশ্নে উল্লিখিত বাক্যের শূন্যস্থানে past form - would বসবে।

• আবার বাক্যটাকে Direct Narration এ চিন্তা করলে এ রকম হয় - "He said, 'I shall/will be unable to come.'"
- Direct Speech এর Reporting verb টি past tense এ হওয়ায়, Reported speech - ও past tense এ হবে।
- reported speech এর will এর পরিবর্তিত হয়ে would হবে, can হবে could.
- তাই শূন্যস্থানে would বসবে।
