Certain industrial processes and consumer products result in the emission of ozone-depleting substances (ODSs) to the atmosphere.
- ODSs are manufactured halogen source gases that are controlled worldwide by the Montreal Protocol. These gases bring chlorine and bromine atoms to the stratosphere, where they destroy ozone in chemical reactions.
- Important examples are the chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), once used in almost all refrigeration and air conditioning systems, and the halons, which were used as fire extinguishing agents.

- ওজোনস্তর হলো পৃথিবীর বায়ুমন্ডলের স্ট্র্যাটোস্ফিয়ারে অবস্থিত একটি আবরণ যা প্রাণীকুলকে সূর্যের অতিবেগুনী রশ্মি থেকে রক্ষা করে।
- কিছু কিছু গ্যাস ওজোনস্তরের ক্ষয় সাধন করছে যার কারণে সূর্যের অতিবেগুনী রশ্মি বায়ুমণ্ডল ভেদ করে সরাসরি ভূপৃষ্ঠে চলে আসছে।
ওজোনস্তর ক্ষয়ের জন্যে দায়ী গ্যাস সমূহের মধ্যে রয়েছে:
- সিএফসি (ক্লোরোফ্লোরোকার্বন)
- ক্লোরিন
- ব্রোমিন
- নাইট্রাস অক্সাইড
- নাইট্রোজেন অক্সাইড
- মিথেন
- মিথাইল ক্লোরাইড ইত্যাদি।
