• 'An exaggerated statement or an extreme overstatement' is known as - Hyperbole.

• Hyperbole (noun) [uncountable noun, countable noun]
- English Meaning: A way of speaking or writing that makes someone or something sound much bigger, better, smaller, worse, more unusual, etc. than they are.
- Bangla Meaning: অতিশয়োক্তি; অত্যুক্তি; অতিরঞ্জন।
- কোন ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুকে তার বাস্তব অবস্থানের চেয়ে বাড়িয়ে বলা।

• ইংরেজি সাহিত্যে সাহিত্যিকরা তাদের বিভিন্ন রচনায় Hyperbole এর ব্যাপক প্রয়োগ ঘটিয়েছেন।
- অতিরঞ্জিত ভাব প্রকাশের জন্য Hyperbole ব্যবহৃত হয়।
- প্রিয়জনের প্রতি তীব্র প্রশংসা জানাতে কিংবা হাসির উদ্রেক অথবা কঠিন সমালোচনা প্রকাশ করতেও Hyperbole এর ব্যবহার হয়ে থাকে।
- সে কারণে Hyperbole negative or positive দুই রকমই হতে পারে।

• Hyperbole এর কিছু উদাহরণ হচ্ছে -
• "Ten thousand saw I at a glance."
• “I loved Ophelia. Forty thousand brothers could not, with all their quantity of love, make up my sum”
• " I’ll love you, dear, I’ll love you

• "I had to wait in the station for ten days– an eternity."

• অন্যদিকে,
• Metaphor:
- Metaphor is an implicit comparison between two different things.
- যখন কোনো বাক্যে দুটি ভিন্ন বা বিজাতীয় জিনিসের মাঝে পরোক্ষভাবে বা রূপকার্থে তুলনা করা হয় তাকে বলা হয় Metaphor.
- While hyperbole is exaggeration, metaphor is using one thing to represent something very different.
- যেমন:
- Time is money.
- Life is but a walking shadow.

• Personification:
- A figure of speech in which lifeless objects or ideas are given imaginary life.
- অর্থ হচ্ছে কোন জড় বস্তুকে ব্যক্তিররূপ দান
- এর মাধ্যমে কোন জড় বস্তকে কাল্পনিক জীবন দান করে সেগুলোকে উপমা হিসাবে লেখায় ব্যবহার করা হয়।

• যেমন:
''There lies the port: the vessel puffs her sail:
(Tennyson: ''Ulysses'')
- এই উক্তিটি Alfred Tennyson এর Ulysses কবিতা থেকে নেয়া হয়েছে।
- এখানে vessel কে জীবন্ত সত্ত্বার সাথে তুলনা করা হয়েছে।

• Simile:
- A simile is an explicit comparison between two different things.
- দুটি ভিন্নধর্মী জিনিসের মধ্যে As ও Like দ্বারা তুলনা বোঝালে তাকে Simile বলে।
- যেমন: She is as innocent as a lamb.
