Gerund চেনার উপায়ঃ
1) কিছু verb আছে যেমন- avoid, admit, confess, consider, deny, dislike, dispute, enjoy, excuse, give up, imagine, mind, recall, suggest, understand ইত্যাদি এর পর সাধারণত Gerund ব্যবহৃত হয়।
প্রশ্নোক্ত বাক্যে avoid এর পর making শব্দটি বসেছে। তাই তা Gerund.
2) Gerund সাধারণত Subject, Complement, Object of a verb, Object of a preposition, Object of a prepositional verb, Part of a compound noun হিসেবে কাজ করতে পারে।
প্রশ্নোক্ত বাক্যে making শব্দটি object of a verb আবার তা কিন্তু part of a compound noun. কিভাবে? কারন সম্পূর্ণ noun টি হলো making the same mistakes. বিষয়টা পরিষ্কার ভাবে বুঝার জন্য দেখুন- We had no drinking water left. বাক্যটিতে drinking water শব্দটি compound noun. আর drinking শব্দটি gerund.
3) অনেক সময় gerund শব্দটি দ্বারা স্থির কিছু বুঝায়, আর participle দ্বারা চলমান কিছু বুঝায়। যেমন, drinking water এর drinking শব্দটি gerund আর rolling stone এর rolling শব্দটি participle.
4) অনেক সময়, বাক্য থেকে participle সরিয়ে নিলে বাক্যটি অর্থপূর্ণ থাকে; কিন্তু gerund কে সরিয়ে নিলে বাক্যটি অর্থপূর্ণ থাকে না।
