যে Clause তার ভাব বা অর্থ প্রকাশের জন্য অন্য কোনো clause-এর উপর নির্ভরশীল নয় এবং অন্য কোন clause-এর সাহায্য ছাড়াই পূর্ণাঙ্গ অর্থ প্রকাশ করতে পারে, তাকে Principal Clause বলে। আরো সহজ করে বলা যায়, যে Clause মূল sentence থেকে আলাদা করলেও স্বাধীনভাবে অর্থ প্রকাশ করতে পারে, তাকে Principal Clause বলে। Principal clause ছাড়া কোনো বাক্য হয় না। Simple sentence সর্বদাই Principal Clause হয়ে থাকে। আর এটি অন্য কোন Clause-এর উপর নির্ভরশীল নয় বলে একে Independent clause ও বলা হয়ে থাকে।
প্রশ্নোক্ত বাক্যটিতে ”Fahima looks beautiful” একটি Principal Clause কারণ, এটিকে বাক্য থেকে আলাদা করে লিখলেও নিজে নিজে সম্পূর্ণ অর্থ প্রকাশ করতে পারে।

যে সব Clause, Principal Clause-এর কার্য সম্পদনের সময়কে নির্দেশ করে, তাদেরকে Adverbial Clause of Time বা Time clause বলে। এটি সাধারণত বিশেষ কিছু subordinating conjunction দ্বারা শুরু হয়। যেমনঃ When, whenever, while, before, after, since, till, until, as, as soon as, just as, as quickly as, as long as, the moment, no sooner......than, Scarcely.....before/when, hardly..... when ইত্যাদি দ্বারা শুরু হবে।
Structure: Principal clause+ Subordinating Conjunction+ Adverbial Clause of Time.

When I was only 4 years, I first went to school.
-যখন আমার বয়স চার বছর, তখন আমি প্রথম বিদ্যালয়ে যাই।
Five years have passed since I saw him last.
