- ১৫৯৬-৯৭ সালের দিকে এই comedy টি লেখা হয়েছিল।

- একজন ইহুদি (Jew) সুদখোর 'Shylock' এর কাহিনী নিয়ে এটি রচিত। 
- 'Shylock' ছিলেন একজন moneylender. 

- জরুরী প্রয়োজনে সুদ ব্যবসায়ী Shylock এর কাছ থেকে টাকা ধার করতে হয় Antonio কে।
- ধুরন্ধর Shylock শর্ত দেয়, যদি সময়মতো টাকা পরিশোধ করতে না পারে, তাহলে সে ঋনগ্রহীতার শরীর থেকে এক পাউন্ড গোশত কেটে নিবে।
