- মোগল সেনাপতি মানসিংহের স্মৃতিবিজড়িত প্রায় ৪০০ বছরের প্রাচীন দিঘি এই গঙ্গাসাগর।
- দিঘিটির আয়তন প্রায় - ১১.৪৪ একর।
- বাংলা বিজয়ের উদ্দেশে মোগল সম্রাট আকবর তার প্রধান সেনাপতি রাজা মানসিংহকে যখন এ বাংলায় পাঠান তখন রাজা মানসিংহ ডেমরার অদূরে তৎকালীন রাজধানী সেনের ভাগের ঈশা খাঁর বিরুদ্ধে যুদ্ধে যাওয়ার পূর্বে এখানে তাঁবু ফেলেন।
- এ এলাকায় তখন পানীয় জলের অভাব ছিল প্রকট। যার কারণে মানসিংহ তার সৈন্য সামন্ত নিয়ে খনন করেন গঙ্গাসাগর দিঘি।
- দিঘির উত্তর-পশ্চিম কোণায় একটি মহাশ্মশানও প্রতিষ্ঠিত করেন তিনি।

- ১৯০৬ সালে প্রকাশিত পাশ্চাত্যের বিশিষ্ট এফবি ব্রাংকলে বার্ট তার ‘দি রোমান্স অব এন ইস্টার্ন ক্যাপিটাল’ বইয়েও সুস্পষ্টভাবে এই বিষয়টির উল্লেখ করেছেন।
