- এই উপন্যাসের কেন্দ্রীয় চরিত্র Silas একজন তাঁতী। 
- চুরির মিথ্যা অভিযোগে তাকে নিজ লোকালয় থেকে বহিষ্কার করা হয়। অন্য এলাকায় গিয়ে একাকী বসবাস করা শুরু করে।
- মানুষের সাথে যোগাযোগ কমিয়ে দিয়ে সে তার কাজে সম্পূর্ন ভাবে মনোযোগ দেয়। প্রচুর সোনা এবং টাকার মালিক হয়ে যায়। কিন্তু তার টাকা এবং স্বর্ণমুদ্রার থলি চুরি হয়ে যায়।
