- যে সকল clause তাদের অর্থ প্রকাশের জন্য অন্য কোনো clause এর উপর নির্ভরশীল নয় তাদের principal clause বলে।
- আধুনিক English Grammar এ Simple sentence কেও clause বলা হয় কারণ Simple sentence গুলাে সর্বদাই principal clause হয়ে থাকে।

ব্যাখ্যা:
Gerund হল verb+ing। আমরা জানি, gerund noun বা verb হিসেবে ব্যবহতৃ হতে পারে। কিন্তু gerund যদি কখনো শুধুই noun-এর কাজ করে তবে তাকে নির্দিষ্টভাবে verbal noun বলে।
Gerund ও Verbal noun-এর কয়েকটি পার্থক্য হল:
১. Gerund-এর মধ্যে verb এবং noun-দুটোরই বৈশিষ্ট্য থাকে কিন্ত Verbal noun-এর মধ্যে শুধুই noun-এর বৈশিষ্ট্য থাকে।
২. Gerund-এর মডিফায়ার হিসেবে কোন adjective থাকে না। কিন্তু verbal noun-এর মডিফায়ার হিসেবে কোন adjective বা determiner ব্যবহৃত হতে পারে।
৩. Gerund-এর object থাকতে পারে। অপরদিকে, Verbal noun নিজে object হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হতে পারে কিন্তু এর নিজের কোন object থাকে না।
৪. Gerund-এর কোন plural form থাকে না কিন্ত Verbal noun-এর plural ফর্ম থাকতে পারে।
