Question: A military camp had enough food supplies to last for a certain number of days. After 10 days, 1/5 of the men desert and it is found that the provisions will now last just as long as before. How long was that?

Solution:
Let, initially there be 'x' men having foods for y days
After 1/5 of the men left = x - (x/5)
= 4x/5

After 10 days,
x men had foods for (y - 10) days
∴ 1 man had foods for x(y - 10) days
∴ 4x/5 men had foods for = {5x(y - 10)}/4x days
= 5(y - 10)/4 days

ATQ,
5(y - 10)/4 = y
⇒ 5y - 50 = 4y
∴ y = 50

  3. Tk. 800000
  4. Tk. 1500000
Question: Tanveer's investment doubles in every 5 years. If he invested Tk. 50000 in each of the years 2010, 2015, 2020 then what will be the amount received by him in 2025?

Solution:
Given,
Investment doubles every 5 years.

Tanveer invested Tk. 50000 in each of the years 2010, 2015, 2020

Now, he invested 50000 in 2010 so the amount for 2010 is 50000

In 2015 the amount gets double the amount become 100000 and then he again invest 50000 so the total amount of the year 2015 is 150000.

In 2020 the amount gets double the amount become 300000 and then he again invest 50000 so the total amount of the year 2020 is 350000.

In the year 2025 the amount gets double the amount become 700000 finally, the amount in the year 2025 is 700000.

Hence, '700000' is the correct answer.

If 9 engines consume 24 metric tons of coal, when each is working 8 hours per day, how much coal should be available for 8 engines, each running 13 hours per day, it is given that 3 engines of the former type consume as much as 4 engines of the latter type.
  1. 36 metric tons
  2. 12 metric tons
  3. 52 metric tons
  4. 26 metric tons
Question: If 9 engines consume 24 metric tons of coal, when each is working 8 hours per day, how much coal should be available for 8 engines, each running 13 hours per day, it is given that 3 engines of the former type consume as much as 4 engines of later type.

Solution:
We have:
The lesser engines, less coal consumed
More working hours, more coal consumed
Both the cases are directly proportional.
If three engines of former type consume 1 unit, 1 engine will consume 1/3 unit.
If four engines of latter type consume 1 unit, 1 engine will consume ¼ units.
And, less rate of consumption, less coal consumed.
Now, Number of engines = 9: 8
Working hours = 8:13
Therefore, rate of consumption = 1/3 : 1/4

Let the coal consumed by 8 engines is x metric tones
9 × 8 × 1/3 : 8 × 13 × 1/4 = 24 : x
⇒ 9 × 8 × (1/3) × x = 8 × 13 × (1/4) × 24
⇒ 24x = 624
∴ x = 26

  2. Tk. 90
  3. Tk. 100
  4. Tk. 120

Question: X can complete a work in 12 days, and Y alone can do it in 18 days. They work together for 6 days, and Z completes the remaining work in 3 days. If the total payment for the work is Tk. 600, how much should Z get?

= 3 : 2 : 1

∴ Z পাবে = 600 × (1/6) = 100 টাকা

Solution:

Question: Tickets for all but 100 seats in a 10000-seat stadium were sold. Of the tickets sold, 20% were sold at half price and the remaining tickets were sold at the full price of Tk. 2. What was the total revenue from ticket sales?

Solution:
100 are not sold from 10000
So seats sold = 9900

20% of 9900 is = (20/100) × 9900 = 1980
and remaining 80% is 9900 - 1980 = 7920.

each ticket cost Tk. 2 and 1980 seats cost Tk. 1

So, total revenue =  2 × 7920 + 1980 = 17820

Question: 30 men can complete a road construction project in 20 days, working 8 hours a day. How many men need to be appointed extra to complete the same work in 12 days, working 10 hours a day?

Solution:

Working 5 hours a day, A can complete a work in 8 days and working 6 hours a day, B can complete the same work in 10 days. Working 8 hours a day, they can jointly complete the work in:
  1. ক) 3 days
  2. খ) 4 days
  3. গ) 4.5 days
  4. ঘ) 5.4 days

Working 5 hours a day, A can complete the work in 8 days i.e.
= 5 × 8 = 40 hours
Working 6 hours a day, B can complete the work in 10 days i.e.

(A + B)'s 1 hour's work,
= 1/40 + 1/60 = (3+2)/ 120
= 5/120
= 1/24
Hence, A and B can complete the work in 24 hours i.e. they require 3 days to complete the work.

Question: Rakib and Kabila are working on an assignment. Rakib takes 6 hours to type 32 pages on a computer, while Kabila takes 5 hours to type 40 pages. How much time will they take, working together on two different computers to type an assignment of 220 pages?

Solution:
Number of pages typed by Rakib in 1 hour = 32/6 = 16/3
Number of pages typed by Kabila in 1 hour = 40/5 = 8
Number of pages typed by both in 1 hour = (16/3 + 8) = 40/3

Therefore Time taken by both to type 220 pages = 220 × (3/40) hours
= 33/4 hours
= 16.5 hours
= 16 hour 30 minutes

If A can do 1/4 of a work in 3 days and B can do 1/6 of the same work in 4 days, how much will A get if both work together and are paid Tk. 180 in all?
  1. ক) Tk. 60
  2. খ) Tk. 120
  3. গ) Tk. 90
  4. ঘ) Tk. 180

A in 3 days can do = 1/4 of a work
∴ In 1 day = 1/12 of a work
B in 4 days can do = 1/6 of a work
∴ In 1 day = 1/24 of a work
In terms of ratio, A : B = 1/12 : 1/24 = 2 : 1
∴ A gets = 180 × 2/(2+1) = Tk. 120

  5. None of these
Question: 4 men and 6 women can complete a work in 8 days, while 3 men and 7 women can complete it in 10 days. In how many days will 10 women complete it?

Solution:
Let,
1 man's 1 day's work = x and 1 woman's 1 day's work = y.
Then,
4x + 6y = 1/8 and 3x + 7y = 1/10
Solving the two equations, we get: x = 11/400 , y = 1/400

∴ 1 woman's 1 day's work = 1/400
10 women's 1 day's work = (1/400) × 10 = 1/40
Hence, 10 women will complete the work in 40 days.

  3. 6 days
  4. 10 days

Question: A takes three times as much time as B or twice as much time as C to finish a piece of work. Working together, they can finish the work in 3 days. B can do the work alone in how many days?

Solution:

∴ A + B + C এর একদিনের কাজ = (1/x) + (3/x) + (2/x)
= (1 + 3 + 2)/x
= 6/x

6/x = 1/3
∴ x = 18

Rakib can do a piece of work in 15 days, Rakib and Asif together can do in 12 days. If Asif does the work only for half a day daily then in how many days the work will be completed ?
  1. 3/20 days
  2. 20/3 days
  3. 40/3 days
  4. 3/40 days

Question: Rakib can do a piece of work in 15 days, Rakib and Asif together can do in 12 days. If Asif does the work only for half a day daily then in how many days the work will be completed ?

Solution:

Rakib's 1 day work = 1/15

Since, Rakib and Asif can together complete in 12 days
i.e. (Rakib + Asif)'s 1 day work = 1/12

Then,
Asif's 1 day work,
= (1/12) - (1/15) = (5 - 4)/60 = 1/60

If Asif Works only for half a day daily, then his 1 day work becomes (1/2) × (1/60)
  = (1/120)

Therefore, 1 day work of both Rakib and Asif,
=(1/15) + (1/120) = ( 8 + 1)/120 = 9/120

Hence, the work will be completed in 120/9 = 40/3 days

3 pumps, working 4 hours a day, can empty a tank in 2 days. How many hours a day must 4 pumps work, to empty the tank in one day?
  1. 5 hours
  2. 6 hours
  3. 4 hours
  4. 7 hours
  5. 10 hours

We are given that,
3 pumps, working 4 hours a day, can empty a tank in 2 days.
Therefore, it means that:
3 pumps take a total of 8 hours to empty the tank.
Hence, 1 pump will take 8 x 3 = 24 hours

As the number of pumps decreases, the time required increases.
So, if 4 pumps work, the time required decreases.
∴ 24/4 = 6hrs. needed to empty the tank in 1 day.

A, B and C completed a work costing Tk. 1800. A work for 6 days, B for 4 days and C for 9 days. If their daily wages are in the ratio of 5 : 6 : 4, how much amount will be received by A?
  1. ক) Tk. 420
  2. খ) Tk. 600
  3. গ) Tk. 750
  4. ঘ) Tk. 900
Ratio of their daily wages = 5 : 6 : 4
Total wage = Tk. 1800
6 × 5x + 4 × 6x + 4 × 9x = 1800 [As A, B, C works for 6, 4, 9 days respectively]
Or, 90x = 1800

Question: A and B can do a piece of work in 40 days, B and C can do it in 120 days. If B alone can do it in 180 days, in how many days will A and C do it together?

Solution:
A + B take 40 days. B alone takes 180 days.
∴ A will take 1/40 - 1/180 = 7/360 i.e. 360/7 days.

B + C take 120 days.
∴ C alone will take 1/120 - 1/180 = 1/360  360 days.

∴ A & C together will take 7/360 + 1/360 = 8/360 i.e. 360/8 = 45 days to complete the work.

A tank has water for 72 trees and can last for 54 days for them. If each tree is given 10% less water than 90 trees can get the water for how many days?
  1. ক) 24 days
  2. খ) 36 days
  3. গ) 42 days
  4. ঘ) 48 days

Let each tree take T amount of water every day.
So 72 trees take 72T water in one day.

With 10% reduction each tree will consume 90T/100 amount each day.
So 90 trees take 90 (90T/100) amount in one day
Total water quantity is constant
∴ 72T × 54 = 90 × (90T/100) × D
∴ D = 48 days = Number of days 90 trees can use the water.

If 45 students can consume a stock of food in 2 months, then for how many days the same stock of food will last for 27 students?
  1. 100 days
  2. 144 days
  3. 160 days
  4. 180 days
Question: If 45 students can consume a stock of food in 2 months, then for how many days the same stock of food will last for 27 students?

Solution:
According to the first condition, students consume food in 2 months, i.e. in 60 days.
So this ratio would be 45 : 60

According to the second condition, the same amount of food is consumed by 27 students in x days.
So that ratio would be 27 : x.

By Inverse Proportion,
45 × 60 = 27 × x
⇒ x = (45 × 60) / 27
∴ x = 100

Question: Pervez and Sunny can complete a piece of work in 20 and 15 days respectively. They worked together for 6 days, after which Sunny was replaced by Ashu. If the work would be finished in next 4 days, find the number of days in which Ashu alone could complete the work.

Solution:
Pervez can complete the work in 20 days
Sunny can complete the same job in 15 days
Let the total work = LCM of both
Therefore, the LCM of 20 and 15 is 60, that means total work = 60 units
Now, Pervez's one-day work efficiency = 60/20 = 3 units
Sunny's one-day work efficiency = 60/15 = 4 units
ATQ,
(Pervez + Sunny) together works for 6 days
That means (Pervez+Sunny) have done 7 × 6 = 42 units work in 6 days
Now, the remaining work will be 60 - 42 = 18 units, and it will finish in 4 days.
Now, Sunny is replaced with Ashu:
So, per days work required to be finished = 18 units / 4 days = 4.5 units
But, we know that Pervez's one-day work = 3 units, so Ashu's one-day work = 4.5 - 3 = 1.5 units
Therefore, Ashu alone can finish the total work in 60 units /1.5 days = 40 days

If X and Y can complete a work together in 12 days, Y and Z together in 20 days, and X and Z together in 15 days, then in how many days can Y alone complete the work?
  1. 24 days
  2. 30 days
  3. 36 days
  4. 40 days

Question: If X and Y can complete a work together in 12 days, Y and Z together in 20 days, and X and Z together in 15 days, then in how many days can Y alone complete the work?

Solution:

If 500 laborers can complete a work in 48 days, determine the number of extra laborers required to finish the same work in 40 days.
  1. 60
  2. 80
  3. 100
  4. 120

Question: If 500 laborers can complete a work in 48 days, determine the number of extra laborers required to finish the same work in 40 days.

Solution:

3 men can build a stage in 18 days while 6 boys can also do it in 18 days. If 4 men and 4 boys work on the assignment together, how many days will they take to finish it?
  1. ক) 4.5 days
  2. খ) 6 days
  3. গ) 9 days
  4. ঘ) 27 days

To complete work in 18 days we need either 3 men or 6 boys.
∴ 1 man = 2 boys
Take work done = 1
∴ 3 men x 18 days x 1 = (4 men + 4 boys) x ? days x 1
∴ 6 boys x 18 days x 1 = (8 boys + 4 boys) x ? days x 1 [Convert either all men to boys or all boys to men.]
∴ ? = 9 days = they will need these many days.

  1. ক) 12 days
  2. খ) 15 days
  3. গ) 18 days
  4. ঘ) 20 days
Question: A is thrice as good a workman as B and so takes 40 days less than B for doing a job. The time in which they can do the job together is-

Solution:
Let, A alone takes x days and B alone takes 3x days to complete the work.

According to the question,
3x - x = 40
⇒ 2x = 40
⇒ x = 20

So, A takes 20 days and B takes ( 3 × 20) = 60 days

Now, ( A+B )'s 1 days work = (1/20) + (1/60)
= 4/60
= 1/15

∴ A & B together can do the work in 15 days.

A and B working together can finish a work in 12 days, B and C working together can finish the work in 16 days. If A works for 5 days, B works for 7 days, and C completes the remaining work in 11 days, C alone can complete the work in how many days?
  1. 22 days
  2. 24 days
  3. 26 days
  4. 28 days
Question: A and B working together can finish a work in 12 days, B and C working together can finish the work in 16 days. If A works for 5 days, B works for 7 days, and C completes the remaining work in 11 days, C alone can complete the work in how many days?

Solution:
ATQ,
A + B = 12 days
B + C = 16 days

Note: Assume the total work = LCM of the given days
Take the LCM of days = LCM of (12 and 16) = 48
Let the total work = 48

Note: One day work = (total work/ days)
Now,
(A + B)'s one day work = 48/12 = 4 unit
(B + C)'s one day work = 48/16 = 3 unit

As per the question:
A works for 5 days
B works for 7 days or (5 + 2) days, that means B works 5 days with A and remaining 2 days with C.
C works 13 days or (2 + 11) days, that means C works 2 days with B and remaining 11 days alone.

That means total work done by (A + B) in 5 days
A + B = 5 days × 4 unit = 20 units
And, total work done by (B + C) = 2 days × 3 unit = 6 units
So, A + B + C finish the 26 units of work.

Remaining work = 48 - 26 = 22 unit work
And C completes the remaining work in 11 days.
i.e., C's one day's works = 22/11 = 2 units.

C alone can finish total work in [total work/ C's one day work] = [48/2] = 24 days.

  3. 10 workers
  4. 12 workers

Question: 12 workers can dig a 36-meter long trench working 8 hours per day. How many extra workers are required to dig a 45-meter long trench working 5 hours per day?

Solution:

Piyal and Belal together can complete a work in 3 days. They start together but after 2 days, Belal left the work. If the work is completed after two more days, Belal alone could do the work in how many days?
  1. 3 days
  2. 4 days
  3. 5 days
  4. 6 days
Question: Piyal and Belal together can complete a work in 3 days. They start together but after 2 days, Belal left the work. If the work is completed after two more days, Belal alone could do the work in how many days?

Solution:
(Piyal + Belal)'s one day's work = 1/3 part
(Piyal + Belal) works 2 days together = 2/3 part
Remaining work = 1- 2/3
= 1/3 part

1/3 part of work is completed by Piyal in two days
Hence, one day's work of Piyal = 1/6 part

Then, one day's work of Belal = 1/3 - 1/6 = 1/6
So, Belal alone can complete the whole work in 6 days.
