Comparative and Superlative Degree

Comparative: This building is older than any other building on the street.
Superlative: This building is the oldest building on the street.

• 'Than any other/ than all other' যুক্ত Comparative sentence কে Superlative করার নিয়ম:
- প্রথমে subject+ verb+ the বসবে।
- তারপর Comparative এর Superlative form বসবে।
- Than any other/ Than all other বাদ যাবে
- এবং এরপর তার বাকি অংশ টি বসবে।

Other options:
ক) This building is one of the older buildings on the street.
- এটি ভুল কারণ, 'Than any other/ than all other' যুক্ত Comparative sentence কে Superlative করার ক্ষেত্রে the+ comparative এর Superlative form বসবে।

খ) This building is one of the oldest buildings on the street.
- এটি ভুল কারণ, 'Than any other/ than all other' যুক্ত Comparative sentence কে Superlative করার ক্ষেত্রে the+ comparative এর Superlative form বসবে।

গ) This building is oldest building on the street.
- এটি ভুল কারণ, 'Than any other/ than all other' যুক্ত Comparative sentence কে Superlative করার ক্ষেত্রে প্রথমে subject +verb + the বসবে।

ধরনের sentence কে দুইভাবে comparative degree করা যায়। Subject অপরিবর্তিত রেখে less দিয়ে comparative degree করা যায়।
অথবা প্রদত্ত বাক্যের শেষের noun/pronounটিকে subject বানিয়ে গতানুগতিকভাবে more যোগ করে অথবা শব্দের শেষে –er যোগ করে comparative degree করা যায়।
Degree change করার সময় affirmative sentenceগুলো negative হয়ে যায়।

Correct answer: Her sister is not braver than her.
- Positive Degree থেকে Comparative Degree তে পরিবর্তনের ক্ষেত্রে  সাধারণত than এবং as/so-as এর পরে subjective form বসে।

• As......as যুক্ত positive Degree কে Comparative Degree তে রুপান্তর করার নিয়ম-
- প্রদত্ত sentence এর শেষের subject প্রথম বসে,
- তারপর + verb + not বসে,
- তারপর positive degree এর comparative form বসে,
- তারপর than + প্রদত্ত sentence এর প্রথম subject বসে।

• No other যুক্ত positive sentence কে Superlative করতে হলে-
- প্রথমে No other বাদ যাবে।
- শেষের Subject প্রথমে বসবে + verb বসবে।
- এরপর the + positive degree -এর superlative form বসবে।
- এরপর No other -এর পর থেকে verb -এর আগ পর্যন্ত অংশ বসবে।

• Positive degree: No other lake is as deep as Lake Baikal.
• Superlative degree: Lake Baikal is the deepest lake.

• No other যুক্ত Positive degree কে Superlative degree তে রূপান্তর করার নিয়ম:
- Superlative degree তে প্রথমে no other বাদ যাবে।
- Object (Positive degree -এর পরের) টি Subject হয়ে বসবে।
- Subject অনুসারে verb বসবে।
- the + superlative degree বসবে।
- no other এর পরের Subject টি Object হয়ে বসবে।
- বাকি অংশ বসবে।

• Positive degree: No other student is as hardworking as Rahim.
• Superlative degree: Rahim is the most hardworking student.

- Superlative: She is the tallest girl in the class.
- Comparative: She is taller than any other girl in the class.

• The যুক্ত Superlative Degree-কে Comparative Degree-তে পরিণত করার নিয়ম:
- প্রদত্ত Sentence এর Subject ও verb বসে।
- the উঠে যায়।
- Superlative এর Comparative form বসে।
- than any other/than all other বসে।
- প্রদত্ত Sentence এর বাকি অংশ বসে।

• Structure: Subject + Verb + Superlative Degree- এর Comparative form than any other + প্রদত্ত Sentence-এর বাকি অংশ।

• Note: of all থাকলে সেক্ষেত্রে of all এর জায়গায় than all other বসে এবং of any এর পরিবর্তে than any other বসে।

Other options,
খ) This book is the heaviest book. 
- এটি অর্ধেক সঠিক, কিন্তু "all books" উল্লেখ করা হয়নি।
- তাই comparative sense পুরোপুরি প্রকাশ হয়নি।

গ) This book is the most heaviest of all books.
- এখানে "most heaviest" ব্যবহার করা হয়েছে, যা ভুল।
- Superlative already "heaviest", তাই "most" দরকার নেই।

ঘ) This book is the heaviest of among all books.
- "of among" একসাথে ব্যবহার করা ভুল।

Positive: The cow is as useful as the goat.
Comparative: The goat is not more useful than the cow.

• As ........ as যুক্ত Positive Degree-কে Comparative Degree- তে রূপান্তরিত করার নিয়ম:-
- শেষের Subject টি প্রথমে বসে,
- verb + not + Positive Degree--এর Comparative form,
- than + প্রদত্ত Sentence-এর প্রথম Subject.

Other options:
ক) The goat is not as useful as the cow.
- ভুল কারণ, এটি একটি Positive Degree-এর বাক্য, Comparative নয়।

খ) The goat is lest useful than the cow.
- ভুল কারণ,এখানে "lest" শব্দটি ভুলভাবে ব্যবহৃত হয়েছে। সঠিক শব্দটি হবে "less".

গ) The goat is more useful than the cow.
- ভুল কারণ, As ........ as যুক্ত Positive Degree-কে Comparative Degree- তে রূপান্তরিত করার ক্ষেত্রে অর্থের পরিবর্তন করা যাবে না।
উক্ত অপশনের বাক্যটির অর্থ মূল বাক্যের অর্থের বিপরীত।

• One of the ছাড়া শুধু the + superlative degree থাকলে comparative করার নিয়ম:
- প্রদত্ত sentence এর subject এবং verb বসে।
- the উঠে যায়।
- Superlative degree এর comparative form বসে।
- than any other বসে।
-  প্রদত্ত sentence এর বাকী অংশ বসে।

• Superlative degree: Rakib is the best athlete in the group.
• Comparative degree: Rakib is better than any other athlete in the group.

• উত্তর: ক) Iron is the most useful of all metals.

- Comparative থেকে Superlative করতে “the most” ব্যবহৃত হয়।
- “Most other” থেকে বোঝা যায় Iron শ্রেষ্ঠ।
- Most other থাকলে superlative করতে হলে the most/ the superlative form ব্যবহৃত হয়।
- তাই superlative form হবে: the most useful.
- বাকিগুলো ভুল degree বা preposition ব্যবহারে ত্রুটিপূর্ণ।
- তাই ক সঠিক উত্তর।

Other options:
খ) Iron is more useful than all metals. → ভুল, কারণ এটি logically অসম্ভব— আয়রন নিজেকেও ছাড়িয়ে যাবে।

গ) Iron is the most useful than other metals. → grammatical ভুল; “most” এর সঙ্গে “than” ব্যবহার হয় না।

ঘ) Iron is more useful than any other metal. → এটি একটি stronger comparative sentence, তবে “most other metals” এর সমতুল নয়।

- Positive: No other city is as crowded as Dhaka.
- Superlative: Dhaka is the most crowded city.

• No other যুক্ত positive sentence কে Superlative করতে হলে-
- প্রথমে No other বাদ যাবে।
- শেষের Subject প্রথমে বসবে + verb বসবে।
- এরপর the + positive degree -এর superlative form বসবে।
- এরপর No other -এর পর থেকে verb -এর আগ পর্যন্ত অংশ বসবে।

Than most other/ than few other যুক্ত Comparative Degree কে Superlative Degree তে রূপান্তরের নিয়মঃ
Structure:- Subject + Verb + one of the + Comparative Degree-এর Superlative form + most other/ few other এর পরের অংশ।
Comp: Dhaka is bigger than most other cities in Bangladesh.
Super: Dhaka is one of the + biggest + cities in Bangladesh.
সমাধানঃ প্রদত্ত Sentence টির Subject ও Verb বসানাে হয়েছে। নিয়ম অনুযায়ী one of the বসানাে হয়েছে + bigger এর Superlative form ''biggest'' বসানাে হয়ােছ + most other এর পরের অংশ ''cities in Bangladesh'' বসানো হয়েছে৷

Positive: No other animal is as ferocious as the tiger.
Comparative: The tiger is more ferocious than any other animal.

- প্রশ্নে প্রদত্ত বাক্যটি একটি Positive Degree-তে আছে। "No other" যুক্ত Positive Degree  কে Comparative Degree তে পরিবর্তনের নিয়ম নিম্নরূপ।
- No other যুক্ত Positive Degree  কে Comparative Degree তে পরিবর্তনের নিয়ম:
- শেষের subject প্রথমে,

- adjective এর comparative form বসাতে হয়,

- এটি ভুল কারন No other যুক্ত Positive Degree  কে Comparative Degree তে পরিবর্তনের ক্ষেত্রে "than any other" ব্যবহার করতে হয়।

গ) The tiger is most ferocious than any other animal.
- No other যুক্ত Positive Degree  কে Comparative Degree তে পরিবর্তনের ক্ষেত্রে "adjective" এর comparative form বসাতে হয়।

ঘ) The tiger is most ferocious than most other animals.
- No other যুক্ত Positive Degree  কে Comparative Degree তে পরিবর্তনের ক্ষেত্রে "adjective" এর comparative form বসাতে হয়।

• Comparative: The teacher is stricter than the assistant.
• Positive: The assistant is not as strict as the teacher.

• Than যুক্ত Comparative কে Positive করার নিয়ম:
- প্রদত্ত বাক্যের Than-এর পরে যাকে তুলনা করা হয়েছে, সেই অংশটি আগে বসে।
- Auxiliary Verb বসে।
- Not বসে (যদি মূল বাক্য affirmative হয়)।
- as বসে।
- Comparative degree-এর positive form বসে।
- as বসে।
- মূল বাক্যের প্রথম Subject শেষের দিকে বসে।

Comparative: My house is bigger than yours.
Positive: Your house is not as big as my house. 

• Correct sentence: He is poorer of the two.
- Bangla Meaning: দুজনের মধ্যে সে বেশি দরিদ্র।

• Degree of comparison অনুযায়ী:
- যখন দুটি ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুর মধ্যে একটির দোষ/গুণ সম্পর্কে বলা হয়, তখন adjective -এর comparative degree -এর পূর্বে The বসে।
- এক্ষেত্রে, sentence -এর শুরুতে অথবা comparative degree -এর পরে Of the two কথাটির উল্লেখ থাকে।

• Structure:
- Of the two + plural noun + verb + the + comparative. অথবা,
- Subject + verb + the + comparative + of the two + plural noun.

More examples:
- This is the better of the two.
- Of the two shirts, the black one is the better.

Other options:
ক) He is more poor of the two.
- "more poor" ভুল, "poor"-এর comparative হলো "poorer".

খ) He is poorest of the two.
- "poorest" হলো superlative, দুজনের তুলনায় ব্যবহার করা যায় না।

গ) "poorer" — সঠিক comparative form। সাধারণত "the poorer of the two" বলা হয়, কিন্তু অপশনগুলোর মধ্যে এটিই সবচেয়ে সঠিক।

ঘ) He is much poor of the two.
- "much poor" ভুল, comparative এর ক্ষেত্রে "much" ব্যবহার না হয়ে শুধু 'poorer' হবে।

Correct Answer: খ) Iron is the most useful of all metals.

 • Degrees of Comparison তিন প্রকার:
১) Positive Degree
২) Comparative Degree
৩) Superlative Degree

১. Superlative Degree:
বৈশিষ্ট্য: কোনো কিছুকে সবচেয়ে বেশি বা সর্বোচ্চ মাত্রায় প্রকাশ করা হয়।
ব্যবহৃত শব্দ: the most / the best / the least / the highest / the tallest ইত্যাদি।

Structure:
- সাধারণত the + most/adjective-est + noun.
উদাহরণ:
- This is the most difficult question.
- Iron is the most useful of all metals.
- He is the best student in the school.

২. Positive Degree:
বৈশিষ্ট্য: দুটি বা তার বেশি জিনিসের মধ্যে সমান মাত্রা প্রকাশ করা হয়।
ব্যবহৃত শব্দ: as...as / so...as.

Structure:
- Very few + plural noun + as/so + adjective + as.
- No other + noun + as/so + adjective + as.
উদাহরণ:
- No other question is as difficult as this.
- Very few students are as brilliant as Rahim.

৩. Comparative Degree:
বৈশিষ্ট্য: দুটি জিনিসের মধ্যে একটিকে অপরটির চেয়ে বেশি বা কম দেখানো হয়।
ব্যবহৃত শব্দ: more...than / -er...than.

Structure:
- adjective + er + than
- more + adjective + than
- than any other / than all other / than most other
উদাহরণ:
This car is faster than that one.
This question is more difficult than any other.

Other options:
ক) No other metal is as useful as iron. → Positive Degree → কারণ: এখানে as…as গঠন ব্যবহার করা হয়েছে।
গ) Very few metals are as useful as iron. → Positive Degree → কারণ: এখানে very few … as…as গঠন ব্যবহার করা হয়েছে।
ঘ) Iron is more useful than any other metal. → Comparative Degree → কারণ: এখানে more … than গঠন ব্যবহার করা হয়েছে।

যদি Adjective এর দ্বারা দুইয়ের মধ্যে তুলনা বুঝায় তাহলে তাকে comparative degree বলে। Positive degree থেকে comparative degree বানানোর কিছু প্রক্রিয়া:
1. সাধারণত এক syllable বিশিষ্ট positive degree এর শেষে er যোগ করলে comparative degree হয়ে যায়। যেমন: Tall থেকে Taller
2. দুই বা ততোধিক syllable বিশিষ্ট positive degree এর পূর্বে more/less যোগ করলে comparative degree হয়ে যায়।
যেমন: Difficult থেকে more Difficult/ less Difficult
3. কিছু positive এর comparative নিয়ম ছাড়াই হয়।
যেমন: bad থেকে worse, Good থেকে better ইত্যাদি।
উপরোল্লেখিত difficult শব্দটি একাধিক syllable বিশিষ্ট হওয়ায় এর comparative degree বানাতে হবে তার পূর্বে more যুক্ত করে। অর্থাৎ এর comparative degree হলো more difficult.
বিঃদ্রঃ অর্থের আধিক্য বুঝানোর জন্য positive degree এর শুরুতে very এবং comparative degree এর পূর্বে much/very much বসানো যায়।
সুতরাং উপরোল্লেখিত ‍নিয়মানুসারে সঠিক উত্তর much more difficult.
Difficultier উত্তর না হবার কারণ হলো একাধিক syllable বিশিষ্ট শব্দকে er যুক্ত করে comparative বানানো যায় না।
Most difficult এটি superlative degree.

• The + superlative degree থেকে comparative degree তে রূপান্তর করার নিয়ম:
- Superlative degree এর Subject টি প্রথমে বসে,

- বাকি অংশ।

• Superlative degree: The Nile is the longest river in the world. 
• Comparative degree: The Nile is longer than any other river in the world.

দুটির মধ্যে compare করার জন্য comparative degree ব্যবহৃত হয়।
সঠিক বাক্যটি হলো - The Disney park in England is larger than the ones in Canada.

• One of the যুক্ত Superlative Degree কে Comparative Degree তে রূপান্তরের নিয়ম:
- প্রদত্ত Sentence এর sub এবং verb বসে।
- One of the উঠে যায়।
- Superlative Degree এর Comparative form বসে।
- than most other বসে।
- প্রদত্ত sentence এর বাকী অংশ বসে। 

• Superlative Degree: Dhaka is one of the busiest cities in Bangladesh.
• Comparative Degree: Dhaka is busier than most other cities in Bangladesh.

The correct answer - খ) stronger
The complete sentence - Iron is stronger than most other metals.
- এখানে একটি তুলনামূলক (comparative) ডিগ্রি ব্যবহার করতে হবে, কারণ লৌহ (iron) অন্যান্য ধাতুর (most other metals) সাথে তুলনা করা হচ্ছে।
- তুলনামূলক ডিগ্রির জন্য adjective-এর শেষে "-er" যোগ করা হয় অথবা "more" ব্যবহার করা হয়। "Strong" এর তুলনামূলক রূপ হলো "stronger"।

Adjective এর শেষে দুইটি consonant (a, e, i, o, u বাদে যে কোন letter) থাকলে তার শেষে comparative-এ er এবং superlative-এ est যোগ করতে হয়।
Iron is stronger than most other metals. বাক্যটিতে comparative degree তে সঠিক গঠন, এবং অর্থও সবচেয়ে জোরালো তুলনা প্রকাশ করে।
এই বাক্যটি সবচেয়ে যথাযথ comparative গঠন।
Subject + Verb + Comparative form + than most other + very few-এর পর থেকে verb-এর পূর্ব পর্যন্ত অংশ।
Example:
- Rahim is taller than most other students.
- This mountain is higher than most other hills in the region.

Other options
ক) strongest: এটি superlative form, যা তিন বা ততোধিক জিনিসের মধ্যে সবচেয়ে বেশি বোঝায়। এখানে শুধু তুলনা করা হচ্ছে, তাই "strongest" ভুল।

গ) most strong: Superlative form-এ "most" ব্যবহৃত হয়, কিন্তু সঠিক রূপ হবে "strongest"। "Most strong" ব্যাকরণগতভাবে ভুল।

ঘ) more strong: Comparative form-এ "more" ব্যবহার করা যায়, কিন্তু "strong" এর ক্ষেত্রে সঠিক রূপ হলো "stronger"। "More strong" অপ্রচলিত এবং ভুল।

• Superlative Degree কে Comparative Degree তে রূপান্তরের নিয়ম:
- প্রদত্ত Sentence এর Subject ও verb বসে।
- the উঠে যায়।
- Superlative এর Comparative form বসে।
- than any other বসে।
- প্রদত্ত Sentence এর বাকি অংশ বসে।

• Note:
- of all থাকলে সেক্ষেত্রে of all এর জায়গায় than all other বসে এবং of any এর পরিবর্তে than any other বসে।

• Superlative Degree: Messi is the best footballer we have ever seen. 
• Comparative Degree: Messi is better than any other footballer we have ever seen.

সঠিক উত্তর: খ) Anika is the brightest student in the class.

• যদি কোনো বাক্য Positive Degree হয়: No other + noun + verb + as + adjective (positive) + as + subject,
তাহলে তা Superlative-এ রূপান্তর করার নিয়ম 
- Positive sentence-এর শেষের Subject কে শুরুতে আনতে হবে।
- এরপর verb (is/was) বসাতে হবে।
- তারপর  the + adjective-এর superlative form বসাতে হবে।
- তারপর বাক্যের no other এর পর থেকে verb-এর আগ পর্যন্ত অংশ বসাতে হবে।
অর্থাৎ Subject + verb + the + adjective-এর superlative form + no other এর পর থেকে verb এর আগ পর্যন্ত অংশ। 

Positive: No other student in the class is as bright as Anika.
Superlative: Anika is the brightest student in the class.

অন্যান্য অপশনগুলোর ভুল:
ক) "Anika is the brighter student in the class."- "brighter" Comparative form ব্যবহার করা হয়েছে (Superlative "brightest" হবে)।
গ) "Anika is one of the bright students in the class." - এটি "Very few...as...as" Positive sentence-এর রূপান্তর। আবার মূল adjective Positive (bright) এ বলা হয়েছে।
ঘ) "Anika was the brightest of all students in the class." Tense অপ্রয়োজনীয়ভাবে Past (was) করা হয়েছে এবং "of all students" অপ্রাসঙ্গিক (মূল sentence-এ "in the class" আছে)।

Superlative এ One of the থাকলে Comparative করার সময় -
than many other + Plural Noun অথবা than most other + Plural Noun বসে।

সুতরাং Comparative করার ক্ষেত্রে খ) Subaita is more intelligent than many other girls in the class. এবং গ) Subaita is more intelligent than most other girls in the class. উভয়ই সঠিক।

Positive: Very few cities are as clean as Singapore.
Comparative: Singapore is cleaner than most other cities.

• Very few যুক্ত positive Degree কে Comparative Degreeতে পরিবর্তন  করার নিয়ম - 
- প্রদত্ত sentence এর শেষের subject + verb + positive degree এর comparative form + very few এর পরিবর্তে than most other + বাকি অংশ।

Example:
Positive: Very few students are as good as Rahim.
Comparative: Rahim is better than most other students.

Positive: Very few people are as generous as she is.

• Than most other/ than few other যুক্ত Comparative Degree কে Superlative Degree তে রূপান্তরের নিয়ম:

• Structure:
- প্রথম Subject প্রথমেই বসে
- এরপর Verb + one of the + Comparative Degree-এর Superlative form + Plural noun বসে
- সব শেষে  most other/ few other এর পরের অংশ।
- নিয়মানুযায়ী সঠিক উত্তর - The Nile River is one of the longest rivers in Africa.

আবার,
- Comparative Degree + than all other/ than any other) থাকলে (the + superlative degree) হয়।
- the + superlative degree এর পর Singular Noun বসে।
- যেমন - The Nile River is the longest river in Africa.

Positive: Very few countries are as large as China.
Superlative: China is one of the largest countries.

• Very few যুক্ত Positive Degree কে Superlative Degree তে রূপান্তরের নিয়ম:
- প্রদত্ত Sentence টির শেষের Subject প্রথমে বসে।
- তারপর Subject অনুসারে verb বসে।
- তারপর one of the বসে।
- Positive Degree এর Superlative form বসে।
- Very few এরপর থেকে verb এর পূর্ব পর্যন্ত অংশ বসে।

Other options:
খ) China is the largest country.
- ভুল কারণ, Very few যুক্ত Positive Degree কে Superlative Degree তে রূপান্তরের সময় one of the এর পর Positive Degree এর Superlative form বসে।

গ) China is larger than most other countries.
- ভুল কারণ, বাক্যটি Comparative Degree তে রূপান্তরর করা হয়েছে।

ঘ) China is one of the most largest countries.
- এখানে "Largest" নিজেই "Superlative form" এ রয়েছে। এর পূর্বে 'most' যুক্ত করার প্রয়োজন নেই।
